Help us reach out to single women farmers and nomadic communities affected by the pandemic in Chhattisgarh:

Mahila Kisan Adhikaar Manch (MAKAAM, https://makaam.in/) state chapter in Chhattisgarh led by member organizations such as Jan Vikas Parishad and Anusandhan Sansthan (JVPAS) and Dalit Adivasi Manch have been working on the issues of Jal-Jungle-Zamin (Water-Forest-Land), especially those centered on women farmers.

Due to the second wave, Chhattisgarh has been under lockdown for more than a month, and given the situation, it is expected that the lockdown shall be extended further from time to time. While the pandemic and its concomitant issues are undoubtedly serious, the livelihoods of rural women working as daily wage labourers, vegetable sellers, cultivators, domestic workers, etc. are under threat. Specifically, the condition of single, deserted and widowed women is extremely precarious. Many of them claim they will be killed by the current economic situation and hunger before covid kills them.

This year, the women forest producers have not been able to collect mahua from the forest. The women often gather forest produce and sell it through their local governance structures, eg. Gram Sabha. Moreover, relief work is yet to begin. As compared to last year, this year the devastation of covid has reached even the remotest villages. With the number of covid patients increasing, a lot of problems are cropping up.

Last year, ration kits were distributed to 200 women farmers through MAKAAM. This year too, we are hoping to do the same and more. The kits would be containing essential supplies such as rations, sanitary napkins, pulses/cereals, vegetables along with basic medical supplies such as oximeters (per cluster in each village), paracetamol, thermometers, etc. We are estimating the price to be around Rs. 1200 per person. We are hoping to reach out to 200 women farmers.

Additionally, in a forest of Kasdol block, Baloda Bazar district in Chhattisgarh, there are communities that make their living by making bamboo utensils. They travel from one village to another and sell bamboo utensils to provide for their families. Due to the pandemic, their haats/bazaars (markets) were closed during the lockdown which has had an adverse impact on their economic condition. They belong to these castes - Mahar, Turi, Kamar, Pardhi, Basor, Karra etc. tribes. We would like to extend our help to these communities as well.

Kindly direct all queries (in Hindi preferably) to Ms. Rajim Ketwas (9165234809) or Mr. Manoj Jangde (9993819042). For any further details, drop an email to mahilakisan.makaam@gmail.com
