Title of the Project: SKILL DEVELOPMENT CENTER FOR IMPOVERISHED ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG WOMEN OF THE SALAPUR KHERA URBAN SLUM

https://youtu.be/Tdqktx6fA-s

What’s the problem? Salapur Khera is an unauthorized colony between Delhi and Gurgaon, India. Urban slums lack proper infrastructure, hygiene facilities, and basic necessities such as food, clean water, and clothes. The people who live in these types of areas struggle with high rates of illiteracy, unemployment, substance abuse, and criminality. Unhygienic living conditions and little to no access to basic health care cause also high rates of diseases. These families’ income comes mostly from seasonal jobs taken on by the male members of the family and what the women earn as housemaids. All the above reasons contribute to further gender inequality among the slums’ inhabitants. In fact, without proper education and being financially dependent on men, women are more likely to experience a series of abusive situations and domestic violence. Not only. Rape cases and abductions are a daily reoccurrence, limiting even more women’s freedom and well-being. This situation got worse after the pandemic, making this vicious cycle even more difficult to break. In fact, many people from marginalized communities lost their jobs due to covid-19 and they now live below the poverty line. While the unemployment rate is skyrocketing, there has been no governmental employment generation program since 2014.

Who are we? HEEALS is a grassroots Non-Profit/NGO with an Operational office in Gurgaon, We are registered under the Indian government Section 21 of the 1860 Society Act In Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. We have a mandate of empowering local and rural communities to become sustainable in the Health, Education, Environment, and Livelihood Society sectors through research and development, engaging workshops, resource distribution, and content creation. Since 2010 we have been working on Health, Education, Environment, Water, Sanitation, Menstrual Hygiene, and Gender Equality Projects. Heeals was built by a core team of the committed executive committee and staff members, who collectively have extensive experience in rural, urban, and social development in India. Most of the founding staff is working voluntarily or semi-voluntary.

Why do we do this? We at HEEALS believe that by starting small and working with one community at a time, we can begin to make changes that will spread gradually throughout India, all the while working hard to create and maintain a self-sustaining society. With this project, we plan to facilitate the empowerment of the women and the youth of Salapur Khera through the acquisition of life-long hard skills that will allow them either to find a job in the nearby manufacturing factories and companies or to start a small business of their own. By raising the standards of living we aim to improve the livelihood of the people within this community, empowering them both from an economic and a social perspective. More chances of employment would mean greater financial stability and independence, not only for women and young people but for their families too. Here at HEEALS we truly believe that! Once the students of our upcoming program learn this very useful set of skills, they will be able to pass it down to other people as well and contribute to creating a self-sustaining community.

Target population: Young women and men between 16-25 from the Salapur area who attended school at least until 8th grade for computer classes. Women between 20-40 for tailoring classes. The age requirements are flexible in nature as they are just indicative numbers.

Duration of the Project: 3-month training with 4-5 classes per week of ≤ 10 students for the computer classes. 3-month training with 4-5 classes per week of ≤ 15 students for the tailoring classes.

How are we going to do it? We will rent a place within the Salapur Khera area and we will provide both electrical and pedestal sewing machines with a 1 to 3 ratio, computers, tables, tools, blackboards, water dispensers, ceiling fans, and so on. We will provide 15 women between the age of 20-40 with a 3-month long training program, which consists of 4-5 classes per week of 2 hours duration. At the same time, we will provide 30 young people between the age of 16-25 with a 3-month long training program, which consists of 4-5 classes per week of 1-hour duration. Furthermore, we are gonna hold a few classes on the side, to teach useful English vocabulary and improve the students' soft skills. The teachers of both courses will be skilled individuals from Salapur Khera and/or the surrounding area, in order to provide the community with the tools to truly become self-sustained.  At the end of the course, there will be a final exam for both classes, after which the trainees will obtain the relevant NSDC Certification issued by the Government. The NSDC Model Curriculum for the computer classes covers the fundamentals of computers, which include the basic appearance of the desktop, MS Office 2010, and folder structures. The NSDC Model Curriculum for the tailoring classes is available at the following link: https://nsdcindia.org/sites/default/files/MC_AMH-Q1947_Self-Employed-Tailor.pdf

Objectives:
Provide a 3-month training with a qualified tailor and adequate tools, that will teach important sewing skills ranging from thread cutting to machine embroidery.
Provide a 3-month training with a qualified computer teacher and adequate resources, that will teach basic computer skills ranging from MS Office 2010 to folder structures, that enhance employability among young people.
Provide soft skill training on the side, through basic English classes and a vocational learning program where the students can learn important things like how to face a job interview and gain more self-confidence.
Provide young people and women a well-rounded training that will increase their chances of employment and/or create job opportunities within the community. This will generate better living conditions for not only them but many other people in the Salapur Khera area. Doing that will hopefully help create a more aware, connected, and self-sustaining community where both women and men from marginalized backgrounds can thrive.
Provide a skill learning center that will hopefully teach many people practical skills and become a go-to place among the whole community. For this reason, we are also thinking of providing the learning center with books, board games, and basic sports equipment. We want this to be a safe space that will strengthen the community feeling.

With that being said, thank you so much for each and every donation! We appreciate any type of effort to support our campaign and reach our goal. Even a small donation makes a huge difference. And if you cannot donate, just help us spread the word :).
Let's make the world a better place together!

We are uploading the budget that we have calculated up until now for our Skill Development Center. This is the budget on which we have based the amount that we have decided to gather through this crowdfunding platform. If any change occurs, we will make sure to upload the final version here as soon as possible.
