The Covid-19 pandemic has affected us all, but some are facing the brunt more than others.
We have witnessed in person or seen in the news, the heart-wrenching images of migrants headed “home” – families, women and children alike walking, trucking with the hope to reaching home in their villages and small towns. Travelling impossible distances in the treacherous summer heat has meant risking their lives, and some lives have been tragically lost.
These are migrant workers who moved to cities in search of jobs and better livelihoods, just like many of us who migrate to other states and countries in search of opportunities. They are contributors to our nation's growth and now like us, are facing tremendous uncertainties. The urge to go back home is understandable, especially when there is no safety net in the cities. Without access to adequate means, some of the decisions are not just difficult but dangerous too. The stories of accidents and lakhs of our countrymen stranded midway are spine-chilling. We felt the least we could do is to provide a passage of safety and dignity.
Some of us women alumni of Indian Institutes of Management have come together to form 'IIM Women for Social Action' and wanted to help our fellow citizens reach back home with dignity. While we have the intent, executing the plan is not simple as it requires lot of coordination with governments and other agencies for generating passes, getting the medical certificate, and arranging food en-route. Fortunately, we got connected with actor Sonu Sood, who has already done the necessary due diligence and helped hundreds of migrants go back home safely. We have decided to collaborate with him in our efforts.
We request you to join us and help these migrants reach back home safely, and with dignity. We have created a campaign on Milaap for this. The funds from this campaign will be used for transportation of migrants to their home states, including – identifying migrants, transportation on buses, food en-route, required documentation and other arrangements.
Please support us and donate so we can maximize the impact of this campaign and help our fellow citizens reach home safely, and with dignity.
