ABOUT PROJECT VEDANA

Project Vedana is a special project of the SarkariSchool.in & We Citizens Foundation, a not-for-profit organization. Project Vedana aims towards creating awareness campaigns to reduce school absenteeism/dropouts in girls during their menstrual cycle in rural areas through active involvement of youth and creating conversation around normalizing the taboos and stereotypes around periods. So far, Project Vedana has led a large-scale initiative on reducing the absenteeism of girl children due to menstruation by conducting workshops in Govt schools and engaging with young and driven people across different states. Project Vedana has prioritized restoring the dignity of these girl children through campaigns like Gift-A-Smile and Gift-A-Pad in which Vedana fellows have visited low-income rural and slum areas to provide menstrual products and other gifts and have held impactful conversations with young girls and their parents. Project Vedana is also working tirelessly for policy advocacy and for organizing panel discussions, conferences, one-on-one interviews with other NGOs, and creating social media campaigns to promote period positivity.

Our Plan

Initiating Vedana FellowshipABOUT THE VEDANA FELLOWSHIP -

Vedana Fellowship is a 5-month leadership journey designed by WeCitizens Foundation & SarkariSchool.in to nurture future leaders in the Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) ecosystem. Selected fellows will work for addressing the issue of school absenteeism caused by menstruation-related problems. Fellows will be identified through a proper selection process and will represent different regions and backgrounds. Through Vedana Fellowship, the creative and passionate individual will join our tribe to help us make menstruation no more a hurdle in the path of girls and their education.

Selected fellows will do the following:
 - Collaborating with students of different govt. schools or underprivileged girl children to spread awareness and motivate them to attend school during their menstrual cycle.
 - Workshops with menstruator in schools.
 - Organizing door-to-door activities to address the absenteeism issue.
 - Organizing skit, painting, or any other relevant competition to spread awareness.
 - Supporting in distributing biodegradable pads to unprivileged children.
 - Collaborating with local organizations/influencers.

Gift a pad campaign

Most schoolgirls from rural areas heavily relied on their schools for sanitary pads. With schools shutting down indefinitely because of COVID-19, it is extremely difficult for girls to get sanitary napkins and they end up practicing unhygienic methods. To tackle this lack of access to period products, especially during the COVID-19, SarkariSchool launched the “Gift a pad campaign”, which is a series of pad donation drives for the betterment of health and wellness of schoolgirls from rural areas. So far, we have been able to reach out to more than 500 girls.

Recognizing efforts and felicitating grassroots icons

We are planning to felicitate and motivate 25 icons who are working at the grassroots level for awareness and removing menstruation-related social taboos. We will publish their stories on the website (sarkarischool.in) and organize one event to recognize their contribution. Specially curated Certificate and Memento will be sent to all icons as a token of appreciation.
