Myeloma usually affects older people, which makes this a shocking diagnosis for a young person who has a lifetime of dreams ahead of him. Please see more details below -
Dr. Vikrant Ovhal is a 37 year old doctor based in New Delhi. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He was prescribed a combination therapy of Daratumumab, Bortezomib, Lenalidomide, and Denosumab as induction therapy, followed by stem cell transplant, followed by Lenalidomide maintenance therapy. However, the insurance rejected his treatment and he has not been able to start his proper treatment regimen. During the induction period of first 6 months, the cost of Bortezomib, Lenalidomide, Denosumab is about 50,000 rupees per month. The cost of Daratumumab is about 2 lakh rupees per dose and 10 to 12 doses of Daratumumab are to be given during this induction period. The cost of drugs alone during induction period is about 27 lakh rupees. After the induction period, the stem cell transplant would cost additional 15 to 20 lakh rupees. This initial cost of treatment during the first year will thus add up to 42 to 47 lakh rupees.Due to the extreme cost of the treatment, he has so far only initiated treatment with Bortezomib. This treatment alone is not adequate and his health has since worsened. It is imperative to act urgently and start the prescribed treatment immediately to stop the cancer from progressing.
