THE PROBLEM:
Begging has existed in our society from long, as religious practices of giving alms to the needy are considered a way of pleasing the almighty. However in developing countries like India, where there is widespread poverty and unemployment and a major population still living in rural area migrates to urban areas in search of jobs to raise their standard of living but being unable to find suitable employment they end up begging this makes begging easily available option to ensure survival. The ongoing pandemic of covid-19 has further increased the population of beggars making begging an endemic with multifaceted social problems with great magnitude, but is less understood in all facets. Begging is a result of various factors such as poverty, family conflicts, substance abuse, mental illnesses and disorders, uncontrolled rural to urban migration, increasing unemployment, physical disability etc. These are all poignant reasons leading one to beggary and thus in many situations making beggary as the only available option rather than a choice.
ABOUT BADLAV:
Badlav, established on 15th September 2015 is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 having 12A and 80G certificates. Badlav is aimed at uplifting beggars, one of the most marginalized stratums of society, and usually not covered under any major Government upliftment scheme. Our greater objective is not just charity but it is to provide them a platform and with all the resources which will support them in rebuilding themselves and live a life of dignity by doing dignified work.
