Harish, a four-year-old child, was usually irregular to school. By transforming his classroom with attractive paintings and plenty of play materials in learning corners, he began regularly attending school and playing collaboratively with his friends. Now, he counts stones up to 5, does picture reading, and makes a storyline using books.
In the academic year 2024-25, we have successfully completed our Early Learner Readiness Program (ELRP) pilot in one school in Thiruvarur district, impacting 18 students over a period of six months (September 2024 to February 2025).
Through our intervention, we have witnessed 3X improvement in students' learning levels across domains. For example, In the Cognitive developmental domain, at the baseline, only 6.25% of the children could count three stones from a pile. By the end line, 50% of the children were able to do so. We could also see 30% more improvement in the learning levels of students in the intervention school than the control school.
The results of the pilot are a testimony that ensuring a stimulating learning environment along with necessary capacity building of teachers, and increased parental awareness can significantly improve student learning outcomes in early grades.
We are planning to scale up the project in 4 more schools in the district during the next academic year (2025-26), impacting 100+ students.
