Support Jai Hind Slum and Village Enablement Project, Gurugram
The millennium city Gurugram known internationally for it’s glittering malls, splendid high rises, and MNC offices is also dotted with numerous squalid slums and underdeveloped urban villages, a typical situation of the sad underbelly of the glittering mega cities built and serviced up by toiling migrants working as maids, drivers, gardeners, cleaners, garbage collectors et al with little access to education, skills development, health facilities et al.
Jai Hind Project envisaged for Gurgram Slums and Villages is a tech-enabled, hub and spoke program of primary learning centers (for ages 4-12) in or adjacent to the slum and the main center (for ages 13- 18) for secondary school coaching and vocational training. Initiated in August 2019, this scalable project has a three-pronged approach:
1.) To provide early childhood educational and nutritional support, coaching/guidance for children/students so as to put them firmly in mainstream education;
2.) Relevant skills development, counseling, and mentoring of the youth to find a secure career path by placing them in reputed and responsible businesses/ companies/organizations.
3.) Support the slum community to avail Government welfare schemes like widow pension, disability pension, scholarships for students et al and provide health, financial/ration/ material support during crises like Covid, slum fires etc.
There is one primary centre functioning at the slum near Block A -Sector 57, Gurugram. It has been facilitating bridge coaching for dropout, at risk and out of school children, to go back or get admission at nearby Government school or Private school. Uniforms, clothes, toys etc. are also given to the students. During the Covid shutdown rations and medical support was actively provided in this as also other nearby slums. Working in a participatory way involving/guiding the parents and other responsible members of the Slum, the center is being supported by the more privileged members of the nearby colonies/apartments, who are encouraged to engage proactively in teaching/counseling/mentoring too.
