    transgender people

    from Imphal, Manipur

My name is Santa Khurai and I am a Manipuri indigenous Nupi Maanbi ( transgender woman) from Manipur. I work with a state level apex body for transgender called All Manipur Nupi Maanbi Association (AMANA). My work basically focus on the inclusion of transgender in socio, legal, economic and cultural systems. I am a writer, poet, artist and transgender rights advocate. In the course of journey for the upliftment and betterment of transgender community in Manipur, there were several times that I questioned about leadership and sustainability. A kind of sustainability that has to stay within the community. The prolonged experiences dealing with the grassroots level community has made me to understand the real requirement and the pressing need of the community.

Sustainability and leadership is one that the community in the state have been struggling. Looking into the ground reality, an idea was born in me. It is one practicable idea that would enhance the financial sustainability and empowerment to the community.

In Manipur and the neighbouring state in the North East region of India, banana plants are abundantly available. The parts of the banana’s plant have been used in many purpose. In Manipur banana leafs has been used for ritual procedures and most of the community eat the stem. However a huge amount of banana barks has been wasted. In the recent years only a few initiative has been taken up to use the fibre and produced materials.

The uses of plastic disposable plates and bowl is booming across the region in every events and programs. The uses of such plastic materials is also questionable and there has been constant campaign against the uses of plastic made materials including bottles, plates, glasses and spoons. As a part of supporting the “No plastic” campaign, the production of plates and bowls out of the wasted banana dry bark is one that strikes me.

My idea was inspired by the production of disposable plates, bowls and glasses from the Areca leaf. However in Manipur Areca plant is not grown enough and this made me to switch my idea on the banana plants. This project will help to promote banana farming and plantation and also will stop wasting the barks of the banana plants. It will be able to give job to many transgender community in the state and in the near future with the expansion of the project, this will definitely helps to promote transgender income generation project in the North East region.

Having this idea, I have reached out to a few company that make the machines to produce Areca leaf to disposable plates, bowls and spoons. One company that is willing to support my project by providing training and technical support is ARG based in Combiatore. According to the information gathered the company technical workers had assured me that my idea is practical and a few people in different part of the country have implemented and succeeded.

In this regards, I would like to place my humble request to support this project. Your genuine and kind donation will help me to fulfil my dream and the entire transgender community in Manipur.
