"The Extraordinary Journey of India’s First Known All-Trans Soccer Team " https://www.them.us/story/indias-first-known-all-trans-soccer-team

India’s northeast region, for all practical purposes, does not figure into the country’s larger national narrative. The floods that swamp the region annually go unnoticed, the debilitating refugee crisis stressing the region is conveniently ignored by mainstream media, and its people are often the target of racial slurs when they move to metro areas like Mumbai and Delhi because they don’t “look” Indian.
Now, imagine putting together India’s first all-trans soccer team exclusively from this region, and within two years, getting featured on Oprah and Prince Harry’s new mental health show and having your local game (the fourth edition of their annual Queer Games) inaugurated by the U.S. Consulate General.

That feat was accomplished by Sadam Hanjabam, the founder of Ya-All, an organization rooted in addressing the stigma around mental health that he runs out of his home. (Ya-All reads as “ya-wol” in Manipuri, which translates to “revolution.") While the organization is known to attend distress calls, counsel parents, and organize free mental health and self-determination workshops throughout the year, it’s also home to the all-trans soccer team that is carving out opportunities for gender non-conforming athletes within Manipur’s storied sports culture that has produced several Olympians;

Hanjabam founded the team in 2018 after he saw that trans folks needed a safe space in Manipuri’s sports scene. Composed of players who work in hair salons and tutor government students, the extended team now has over two dozen members who play almost every week, competing in a setting where they don’t have to worry about fitting in.

But among all the recognition , the team is struggling to find support to train, nutrition and handholding. Join us in strengthening this proud initiative of India.
