Across India, countless individuals and communities are quietly building powerful alternatives in ways of living that are rooted in justice, dignity, and harmony with nature. From forest communities asserting self-rule, to pastoralists preserving ecological wisdom, to local economies thriving on cooperation rather than competition, these stories rarely make headlines. Yet, they hold the seeds of a more equitable and sustainable future.

Kalpavriksh has been working towards the nurturing and strengthening of these alternatives in various ways: research, documentation, outreach, narrative building, frameworks of transformations, holding confluences, storytelling and so on.

A dedicated team within Kalpavriksh that has been working on alternatives was instrumental in initiating a process called Vikalp Sangam (Alternatives Confluence) which was launched in India in 2014 in order to provide documentation for and to build awareness of alternative ways of meeting human needs and aspiration without trashing the earth and without leaving half of humanity behind. Alternative ways would address some or all of: Ecological sustainability, Social well-being & justice, Direct democracy and Economic democracy. The process involves meetings of practitioners periodically, at different locations spread out over the country, and a website which has stories, perspectives, resources and events amplifying alternative practices.

Where we require your support:

  1. Storytelling, documentation and hope

At the heart of this effort is the Vikalp Sangam website, a dynamic platform that connects practitioners, researchers, students, and citizens. It serves as a space for learning, inspiration, and collaboration. Whether it is a young student searching for meaningful career pathways, a grassroots organization seeking solidarity, or a policymaker looking for innovative solutions, the platform enables access to diverse knowledge and lived experiences.

Through extensive documentation, research, and collaboration, the website is now a rich repository of over 2000 stories that showcase real, grounded alternatives across sectors like food, health, energy, livelihoods, governance, and culture. These are not just success stories; they are living examples of what a different world can look like.

In times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic this storytelling became even more crucial. We documented inspiring accounts of community resilience and mutual aid, showing how ordinary people responded with extraordinary courage and creativity. Through blogs, webinars, and digital dialogues, we ensured that these narratives reached a wider audience, influencing thought and action.

However, maintaining and expanding this knowledge commons requires sustained effort. From commissioning new stories and case studies, to updating the website, curating multimedia content, and ensuring accessibility in multiple languages, each step demands resources. Your support will help us continue documenting these transformative journeys, amplifying voices that often go unheard, and building a collective imagination for a better future.

  1. Sangams, collaborative action and transformation

While stories are powerful, transformation deepens when people come together. This is where Sangams (confluences of alternatives) play a vital role.

Since the first Sangam in 2014, we have organized over 35 thematic and regional gatherings across India. These Sangams bring together practitioners, activists, thinkers, artists, and community leaders from diverse backgrounds. They are spaces of dialogue, learning, and co-creation where people share experiences, challenge assumptions, collaborate on creative projects, celebrate local and diverse cultures and cuisines, and collectively envision new possibilities.

Each Sangam focuses on critical themes such as dignified livelihoods, decentralized renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, health systems, youth engagement, gender justice, peace-building, Indigenous worldviews, and economic democracy. These gatherings are not conventional conferences; they are participatory, inclusive,  grounded in lived realities. They emphasize direct democracy, where every voice matters, and encourage collaborations that continue long after the event ends. And they always prioritise local cultures and food!

Over the years, these interactions have led to the evolution of a shared framework for understanding alternatives articulated in the ongoing document “In Search of Radical Alternatives.” They have also sparked new initiatives, strengthened networks, and built solidarity across regions and movements.

Beyond physical gatherings, we have expanded into online dialogues and webinar series, connecting voices from across the country and the world. However, organizing Sangams whether in-person or virtual requires significant support. Costs include travel for grassroots participants, accommodation, venue arrangements, translation and documentation, and digital infrastructure. We strive to ensure that participation is accessible, especially for marginalized communities whose voices are most crucial yet often excluded.

Your contribution will directly enable these gatherings to continue. It will help bring together diverse communities, nurture collaborations, and strengthen a nationwide (and increasingly global) network of alternatives. More importantly, it will support the creation of spaces where hope is not just imagined, but collectively built.

Why Your Support Matters

At a time when dominant systems continue to deepen inequality and ecological crisis, supporting alternatives is not optional, it is essential. But it is also difficult generating such support. By contributing to this campaign, you are helping sustain the work of justice, equity, and ecological balance. You are investing in stories that inspire change, and in gatherings that transform ideas into action.

Together, we can ensure that these alternatives not only survive but thrive and guide us towards a future where no one is left behind, and the earth is cared for with respect and responsibility.

Support us today and be part of this transformative journey.
