    The Tribal People of Sonbhadra

    from Sonbhadra

We are a team of Gandhi Fellows working in the district of Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh.

In the rise of the novel corona virus, we are currently working in collaboration with Sonbhadra Vikas Samiti to provide relief to atleast 1000 families of tribal population and daily wage workers in district Sonbhadra.

Sonbhadra has 37.9% of its geographical area under forest. A total of 20.7% of the population in the district is Scheduled Tribe and 22.6% is Scheduled Castes, highest in the state, therefore turns out to be very important in terms of tribal rights and their survival.
The prevailing conditions of these tribal areas are currently deplorable as they are running short of adequate food and hygiene supplies. The already low level of their nutrition is making their survival even more tough. While on field visits, when we talked to a little girl named Maana she said that "Ghare khana khatam ho gayil ba, maange se amma maarib"(all the food is finished and if I ask for more mother will beat me) while the other section of the population had similar remarks as "Corona k toh naikhe pata lekin ganda paani aur bhookhwa se hum sab mar jayib"(we have no idea of corona but we'll definitely die of dirty water and hunger).
Most of the population of daily wage laborers comprise of women who also have the responsibility of bearing and nurturing children. The contaminated sources of water, in absence of proper availability of food sources are making their lives even more difficult depleting their immune system leading them to deadly conditions, making their survival tough.

In order to address this situation we decided to help the families of these resettled tribal areas of  Bega, Bichdi Tola, Margatua, Maukala, Lauaa, Gadura and Basauli-Bhuiran by providing families of 5 members each with food and hygiene necessities (1000 food kits with every kit costing around Rs.550/- containing essentials like rice, oil, flour, salt, pulses, sugar, vegetables and masks) to support their survival for next 10 days owing to its immediate need to fight corona.

In order to fight for the survival of our fellow Indians, it is imperative that we come together and win these lives.
They await our help!
