Gender based violence against women is on the rise globally. Most cases of violence against women go unreported. Women often face the brunt of violence within and outside their households and end up being blamed by the society. Women within prisons and those who are released from prisons after long years of incarceration face multiple challenges in getting rehabilitated into their families and society. We are looking at changing that and ensuring that women have access to a dignified life, which they truly deserve.

The Justice Initiative Foundation is an entity that has embarked on a journey towards justice, beginning with prisoners and prisons. Registered as a Section 8 Company , the Initiative is a not for profit based out of Bangalore, the team has on board individuals not just with a passion for issues related to justice, but also from the legal fraternity, the development sector, those from the IT sector as well as those who have lived the prison experience as well. The organisation is now lead by the team along with Ms. Cecilia Davies who has a long standing experience of having worked with prisons and various communities across the development sector, over two decades.

Currently the organisation is focussed on building a peer group of released prisoners and facilitating psycho-social and economic well-being of inmates and released women inmates across Karnataka. The various initiatives for facilitating artistic expressions are geared towards providing spaces for women to express themselves freely and to create peer support and psycho social wellbeing. The Justice Initiative Foundation is also creating theatrical performances, photo journals, other forms of audio-visual media, that will create awareness amongst academicians, policy makers, development practitioners and the public about the struggles, resilience and life stories of people who have spent long years in prison.
The Justice Initiative Foundation invites you to embark on this journey by contributing towards its cause.

The organisation is looking to raise around Rs.5 lakhs initially from individual donors for the following preparatory work for building the collective:
Support with recruiting and building a strong programme team (some working on an honorary basis as of now)
Documenting stories of resilience and struggle
Producing a theatrical piece on some of the stories
Workshops for prisoners for psycho-social support
Conducting meetings for the collective- to identify leaders who will build a collective of 200 women in the days to come.

How you can make a difference:
You can make a huge difference in changing the lives of women who have no one else to care for them. Reach out in a small way and see your contribution bring a smile on the faces of women who have been through the worst situations. Your support will go towards building a collective of around 200 women across Karnataka who will support each other and build a better life for themselves.

Your support will be used in the following ways:
Provide immediate relief and support for women who get released from prisons
Initiate support groups for women to build on each other’s strengths
Provide opportunities for psychological well-being for the women.
Ensure support for access to artistic expressions for the women.
Share the positive stories of the women that will motivate many.
