“Someone has to fight for the truth.”— Devki Nandan Sharma (1964–2024)
Devki Nandan Sharma of Shankar Garhi village in Mathura was not a politician, not a celebrity, not a businessman. He was a common man with uncommon courage. For over 13 years, he dedicated his life to exposing corruption in rural development schemes — particularly under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Armed with nothing but the Right to Information Act and the fire of justice in his heart, he filed RTI after RTI to uncover irregularities in public works. In return, he was stonewalled, ignored, threatened — and finally, abandoned.
On February 12, 2024, Devki Nandan sat on a hunger strike in a small temple that was part of his modest home. He consumed nothing but water and lemon water. He had one demand — truth, transparency, and accountability in how taxpayer money was used in his village.
For four long months, no meaningful response came. On June 14, 2024, Devki Nandan breathed his last, having given his life for the cause of clean governance. He died of a heart attack — but the real cause was institutional indifference and wilful silence.
💔 He Gave Up Everything. His Family Shouldn’t Have To.

As a fellow activist, I have known the courage it takes to speak truth to power in rural India. Devki was not just a whistleblower — he was a martyr for democracy, a man who died so villages like his can hope for a better tomorrow.
We lost a brave soul — let’s not lose our conscience too.
If his sacrifice meant anything, let’s ensure his daughter gets the life he fought for, and his wife the dignity she deserves.

Devki Nandan is survived by:
- His wife Sudha Sharma, who now runs a tiny kirana store with no savings, no land, and no support.
- His 16-year-old daughter, who is still in school, with dreams of becoming an officer — the kind her father hoped to hold accountable one day.
This is where we, the people, come in.
