Intellectual disability in children causes learning difficulty, problem in social communication skills, poor gross and fine motor skills which adversely affect their ability to perform successfully in daily life. Moreover when these children attends mainstream schools, they face additional challenges as compared to their regular peers like lack of competent teachers to understand the children with ID , large size classes, rigid curriculum , negative attitude of parents and teachers about such issues. These factors often lead to high drop-out rates of children with Intellectual disability at a very early stage. Such children when at home are deprived of right to education along with little scope of socialization. It often leads to multifaceted problem to the child as well as for the family. Therefore special education along with one to one intervention by a specialized trainer or a special educator in a conducive environment becomes very crucial and essential.Secondly, Adults with Intellectual Disability has difficulty in understanding new information, in socialising and communicating. Because of their poor cognitive development , they lack in decision making and judgment skills. These factors limit the ability of such individuals to get employment and navigate independently through life. In such scenario vocational skill development training with incentive based tasks becomes essential for Adults with Intellectual Disability. Hence, Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre for Individuals with Intellectual Disability and Associated Disorders and Persons recovering from mental illness was established in the year 1996 in Guwahati, Assam.
