Project YARN (Young Adult Reading Network) is a social educational initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of reading skills among children from underserved communities, with a special emphasis on the girl child. By setting up community libraries replete with literature from female authors on topics like gender studies, equal rights, and gender justice, the project seeks to empower young readers and children by exposing them to literary role models. The project aspires to serve a dual purpose of introducing children to inspirational characters while simultaneously helping students, particularly those from underserved communities, to gain access to voluminous library resources.
While India is home to nearly 26 million students enrolled in schools, a large percentage of students continue to remain deprived of educational opportunities. Moreover, the differentiated impact of gender on education means that female students lack access to reading resources and formal literature. In 2020, nearly 40% of female students aged 15-18 were not attending school. While enrollment has increased in 2023, the benefits of gender-centric literature of boosting female literacy and equality continue to remain untapped. To that end, Project YARN has curated a list of educational books for female students and drafted an informative curriculum to help new readers develop the fundamentals of reading complex literature.
The initiative has partnered with Sukhad Foundation and Hamaari Pachan to raise funds for installing a vast library at the NGO sites and community areas. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing informational books, each of which can help a female student tap into her potential and empower herself.
