The Aligarh Muslim University is a Central University established in 1920. The university has a long heritage of producing research for the betterment of the society. To continue the legacy of quality research, an initiative has been made by the students, faculty and alumni of this institution to develop a Nanosatellite. The Satellite is named SS AMU SAT after the visionary educationist and reformer, and the founder of the AMU - Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

The United Nations’ SDG on eliminating poverty is an ambitious goal. The initiative of SS AMU SAT is motivated by the use of satellite imaging in periodic aerial surveillance, and therefore, it shall be purposed for studying the economic growth of some of the poorest districts of India using satellite imaging, and help in evaluating the gap between envisaged growth and the real growth. Satellite images taken with a high-resolution camera, processing at the transponder and transmitting to the earth station. demands higher bandwidth, on-board memory and computation, therefore, the SS AMU SAT shall use an in-house developed Novel Image compression algorithm for a faster transmission with limited resources.

The impetus to Space programme by the Union Cabinet, led by our Honorable Prime Minister, has enabled the academia to take up research in Space Technology, therefore, in order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives, the project has been developing the satellite subsystems in-
house. The SS AMU SAT further aims to comply with the Make in India Policy by procuring the Indian make components as much as possible.

Presently, the team is in the process of procuring the components. The total financial implication has been estimated to INR 65 Lacs, including an estimated INR 20.5 Lacs for launch & related activities. The remaining amount (INR 44.5) required for procurement and fabrication shall be used to procure critical space-qualified components, fabrication of the satellite’s engineering and flight models, logistic expenses, travel & transportation of the satellite and contingency.
