54% of children with multiple disabilities in India never attend an educational institution. In Ropar, Punjab, 100 differently-abled children are waiting for admission into a ‘special school’ – but need your financial support.
They are waiting for the opportunity to attend their first-ever school, and to receive the necessary rehabilitation and therapy, to support them in life.
The school they are on the ‘waiting list’ for, is Ambuja Manovikas Kendra. AMK works to improve the quality of life of 120 differently-abled children through:
- Special Education
- A range of Rehabilitative Therapies (including home-based rehabilitation) and
- Vocational & Skill Training for youth.
- Extra-Curricular Activities (sport, music, art, yoga)
- Life Skills
- Parental & Family Support Services
In India, families of differently-abled children struggle to find the necessary services, opportunities and support to help their child reach their full potential. Particularly in rural areas, without support, parents often give up hope and special needs children are left to languish at home.
In India, 2.68 crore people or 2.21% of the total population, are ‘disabled; in Punjab alone, the percentage of disabled is higher at 2.35% of the population. A lack of educational opportunities and social stigma, severely limit the opportunities for disabled people to participate in social and economic life - or even to be considered as productive individuals within their own families.
