Story

On December 16th, 2:48 A.M, I got an email to check my application update on the New York University portal. Moments later, I was greeted with an acceptance letter to a university campus with about a 5% acceptance rate- NYU Shanghai's class of 2026 as an incoming freshman. Being a first-generation, queer POC, I was more than elated to have been deemed worthy of being accepted into a university that has been my dream for the past 4 years. Being a social activist for a major part of my high-school life, I have shared various fundraisers; yet it took me a lot of courage to set up one for my own needs and hopefully I am not taking someone else's space.

I come from a family that has had little to zero income for the past 4 years, with only relying on familial support & savings in the small town of Dehradun. To support myself, I have worked extensively to reach the goal of being the first in my family to go abroad for undergrad. More than as an academic achievement, I need this for my survival because I haven't had support from those around me. I have been a victim of constant bullying, sexual assault as well as queerphobia, for most of my life and to end the cycle here, I must serve as someone who will pave the way for others like me, who are disowned within their own country.

I have been awarded a scholarship of 56K USD/Year, which covers the majority of my cost of attendance, which is 70K+ USD/Year. However, the rest 24K/Year is out of the expected range of my family's contribution. My family can at max provide me with a 6k USD/Year contribution & financing such a large amount is not possible for me as I have to reply back to NYU by 5th January 2022.
A donation target of 15 Lakh INR or 20k USD will at least help me cover the first-year costs of my studies at NYU as a full-credit student.   Not only would it allow me to study at one of the top universities in the world, but also help in the surprisingly low representation of queer people of colour at these institutions.

It would mean a lot if you could donate, every rupee, every dollar counts for this.
