'The time is always right, to do what is right...'
Just 5 km away from Taratolla - in the heart of Greater Kolkata lies a slum - Sholo Bigha - or an area of 16 bighas, housing nearly 15,000 people. Amazingly, education, healthcare, sanitation, and electricity have eluded them - possibly to protect a brighter future of some promoter. To comprehend children not being granted their right to education, women seeking healthy sanitation and primary healthcare... Is difficult.
Save Democracy, an apolitical body, consisting of socially aware citizens from diverse backgrounds, has taken it up as a challenge.
The broken-down school is renovated, thanks to an NGO. It will double up as a primary health center with doctors visiting every 10 days.
We wanted to give free medical consultation to needy people comprising of senior citizens, daily laborers, corporation workers, poor construction workers, children born to the laborers, and daily wages employees.
So many people die here in ignorance of disease or in the want of money to afford suitable healthcare. People keep suffering and dying, as they are unable to arrange for adequate funds in order to afford timely medical treatment for themselves or their family members, relatives, or friends.
I have been planning to construct some public toilets to improve better hygiene and proper sanitation
I managed to bring the community together and communicate the benefits of what we are doing in the village. Today, this small village understands the importance of hygiene and healthcare. Children in the village are educating their elders to use toilets and keep the neighborhood clean. The response from this village gives me hope that I can reach out to more such villages and bring the much-needed difference.
