“Our community depends solely on seeking alms for survival. Because of the current lockdown, we cannot go anywhere to make an income.” - Deepu, Transgender person

“We sex workers want to continue our work, but since it is impossible now, surviving is tough.”

These are voices of persons whom the second wave of COVID-19 in India has impacted immensely  – marginalised communities of sex workers, sexual and gender minorities. For them life has become a daily struggle with lost livelihoods, food uncertainty and serious mental and physical health issues.

These marginalised communities largely earn from seeking alms, sex work, daily wage labour and income from small businesses. With state-imposed lockdowns effective, survival has become challenging — it is even tougher for people living with HIV amongst these communities as obtaining their vital Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is cumbersome during the lockdown.

Last year, Solidarity Foundation (SF) reached over 4500 distressed people from marginalised communities through its supporters. Once again, SF seeks your support for these marginalised communities’ survival in the current difficult times. Solidarity Foundation currently needs to provide ration and hygiene kits and mobile phone recharge for 1000 households in Tamil Nadu.

Location: Theni, Madurai and Kanyakumari districts (Tamil Nadu).

Beneficiaries: Sex workers, sexual and gender minorities (LGBTIAQ+) community persons and people living with HIV amongst them.

Number of households: 1000

Ration and hygiene kit include: Rice (10 kgs), cooking oil (1 litre), toor dal (2 kgs), sugar (1 kg), chilli powder (200 gms), semolina/rava (1 kg), peanuts (500 gms), turmeric powder (100 gms), bengal gram/channa dal (500 gms), tea powder (150 gms), bath soap (2 bars), detergent soap (2 bars), toothpaste (1 100gm tube), salt (1 kg), and sanitary pads (1 packet for female sex workers).

Cost per ration + hygiene kit: Rs 1400

Cost of mobile recharge: Rs 300/household (to communicate and access information).

Total amount per household: Rs 1700.

Marginalised communities need your support to survive this pandemic.
Help them, donate now!
