Their school is filled with students like them who come from underprivileged backgrounds and school is their happy place. A place where they are taught not just alphabets, numbers but are also taught to see big dreams and work towards them.
About the School
The East Bengal Colony Middle school, is located in the Refugee Colony, Sakchi, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. It was established in the year 1953 to provide education to the children of families who were displaced from East Bengal during the partition and were provided homes in the East Bengal Refugee Colony. It is a Government recognised and supported school being managed by a Trust comprising of the people living in the colony.
Currently, the school caters to the underprivileged children, belonging to families who live in the nearby tribal settlement comprising of the Ho, Oraon & Munda tribes. The school has 182 students from Kindergarten to Class 8. Although, the school has been getting some support from the Government in the form of 5 teachers, they hardly get any funds from them. Given the growing needs and expenses, this has not been sufficient and over the years, the school has not been able to keep up with times. This is why we have decided to help make the school equipped with the basic facilities to make it a safe and engaging learning space.
Under the Rotary India Literacy Mission program, the Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West wants make their happy place a truly “Happy School”.
We want to repair the crumbling roof & the dilapidated chajjas which can crumble any time causing serious injuries. Further, we would like to repair the toilets which lack proper plumbing and tiles. The hand-wash station is also in a very poor state. The school lacks access to clean drinking water as well. These are basic necessities that need to be fixed. This will help ensure the school is safe and accessible to them. These tasks are massive and require funds beyond the money available with us.
The estimated budget for the renovation of these urgent issues, is pegged at INR 10 lacs. Any amount donated by you will help us move closer to achieving this goal and is essential for us.
During this pandemic, like other children all across the country, Raja and Sona haven’t been able to attend school and learn & play with their friends. Online classes are not an option for them because their poor parents continue to struggle for two square meals and have no means to afford smart phones & internet. Students like Raja & Sona are looking forward to coming back to school as the pandemic recedes to learn and play with friends again. Your donation will go a long way in making their return more fulfilling and enjoyable.
With your generous help we hope to complete this project by March, 2021.
