Savitri-Fatima Centre for Peer Learning was established in 2016 with the goal of providing academic support and educational upliftment of underprivileged children in our locality, Gabjore, Boudh, Odisha. We established this institution to provide quality education by giving an agency through peer learning to the poor and marginalized children We are motivated by the Phule-Ambedkar idea to promote education for community empowerment. The institution is dedicated to offering free after-school remedial coaching at the Primary and Upper Primary levels, through which we promote a culture of peer teaching and learning. Additionally, we offer mentors and advice to children from underprivileged and disadvantaged communities, to help them prepare for the Navodya Vidyalaya, Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya, and Sainik (Military) School entrance examinations, where students can study up to 12th without any financial constraints. Also, we are counselling and giving career and course guidance to those children who complete their 10th and 12th. Through our mentorship, we sent many kids to Navodaya Vidyala and Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayaduring the past four years (2016–2020).
The multiple waves of COVID-19 and consequent crises adversely affected the well-being of children, with the impact being most acute on children from marginalized sections of society. They got exposed to increased vulnerabilities related to protection, nutrition, health and education. In addition, pandemic-induced school closures and livelihood losses in families dependent on the informal economy led to children from these families dropping out of school to support household needs.
We also encountered a significant hurdle during the COVID-19 issue, just like everyone else, and the facility was shut down for two years straight. Since our institute is located in a rural area and lacks communication with the nearby major city. All our students come from agricultural and landless labourer families (SC/ST/OBC) and they can’t afford a private school or Private tuition for their education. Being dependent on government schools and lack of resources widens the learning gap among them during these two years, and even the parent's ability to support themselves is in jeopardy. We have also recognized that migration is a major obstacle to children's education, as they move with their parents. Now, our foremost objective is to change the minds of children and their parents and send them back to school. Going back to school alone is not enough for basic necessities like health; nutrition is as important as quality education for many.
The objective of this fundraiser is to initiate the community to advocate for the support and education of these poor children to increase their access to education. We intend to create residential facilities for our kids so that, even if their parents go away for work, we can still accommodate them and continue to support their education. The lack of a suitable educational environment, lack of awareness and lack of a culture of education in our locality is a big problem, which also psychologically demotivates children from their aspirations. Also, a safe space for their study is of utmost importance as children coming from vulnerable communities study in their homes in which is a single room is not feasible.
For the time being, we need lodging, food supply, stationery, and other expenses to continue our coaching centre. We now rely on community building since they have supported our endeavour. We need to raise Rs. 7 lakhs to renovate the community building donated by the communities in order to carry out our vision and mission. Earlier we used to spend money from our pockets and also some like-minded people help us with basic needs like chalk, duster and sometimes food.
Now after the Covid-19 crisis this seems to be impossible to depend upon this small community's help. Now, We needed two separate toilets and bathrooms for males and females, three ceiling fans, a whiteboard, a few library shelves, furniture such as a table and chair, and other stationery supplies. A budget for kids' food supply is also difficult since many pupils are staying with us at the centre. We also need a computer and printer to maintain our records and documents.
Since education is the most effective tool for battling social injustice, we are appealing for your kind support in order to do our part. If you share the same views, help us do our part and contribute to this cause.
Our kids are waiting for your generous support. Be a foundation stone for someone's future by giving to a good cause.
Our objective
- to make sure all kids attend school.
- to advocate for quality and cost-free education.
- to promote local culture through the cultural revival initiative.
- to advocate for the Frerian and Ambedkar-Phule pedagogies.
- to encourage learning in a fun, artistic, and creative way.
- to raise children's potential by better understanding their mental and cognitive abilities.
- to empower communities and democratize education.
- to foster a sense of agency among children in order to encourage peer learning.
Our Vision and Mission
Our vision is to embody compassion, empathy, and respect for every individual through the learning experience. We believe that every kid has the capacity to learn differently and that this capacity should be recognised by allowing them to exercise agency over their knowledge. We are hoping to build a platform that will allow the kids to achieve their full potential without fear or pressure. Also, the objective is to foster a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere through peer-to-peer contact supported by mentors and individuals and to apply this on a bigger scale by connecting with the local schools.
