Help Nawal Kishore, who works as a Dhobi in Kolkata and his wife Sarita Devi, his old mother and kids tide over an acute financial crisis caused due to insufficient work during the prolonged Covid 19 pandemic and frequent lockdown.

Nawal Kishore a dhobi who comes to the staff residence quarters of the Satyajit Ray Film and TV Institute in Kolkata is from Bihar. Due to the lockdown situation, where most people have been working from home, he barely gets two or three clothes for ironing from people.

Whereas he used to earn about Rs 14,000/- before the pandemic by ironing clothes and taking bed sheets/curtains for washing from various people inside and outside campus. He used to keep the bare minimum for himself and send the rest back home to his wife Sarita Devi, his family and kids in a village in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

When I stopped giving him my usual number of clothes I used to help him by trying to pay most of what I used to before.

Now he is barely earning rs 1500 a month. I plan to help him by contributing Rs 10,000/- here but it won’t be enough. If another 30 k could be raised it would help him keep afloat for a couple of months and settle some of the losses over last several months. His wife Sarita Devi, his  kids and rest of the family back at home in Bihar will get some respite. Hopefully things will normalise soon. 

Right now he is literally starving and also his family back home are.
He is also desperately looking for washing work- bed covers, sheets, curtains. He is an extremely hard working and honest person. It’s very unfortunate that such a good worker should be in such a situation now. I know him over the last twelve years.
