We are currently experiencing an unprecedented situation due to COVID-19. While the health of every citizen is important, with the country being in complete lockdown, it has also devastated the livelihood and income generation for the millions of people associated with the unorganized sector.
During this lockdown, the trade-off between saving lives and saving livelihoods is insufferable. Informal workers like hawkers, rickshaw drivers, housemaids, sex workers, building security guards, construction workers, need cash to tide them over. We believe that access to basic amenities like food & sanitation is imperative at these times where the situation has rendered them helpless.
The National Hawker Federation has started a relief camp from this week to supply basic food & sanitary items to these daily wage earners and the homeless.
We have started this initiative in Kolkata, West Bengal, and plan to extend the same services to all 29 states where NHF is present.
We are actively trying to ensure fund mobilization and to initiate this program, Mr. Saktiman Ghosh has personally contributed 1 lac from his personal medical treatment cost and 1 lac from the funds of the union members. However, these are nominal amounts, keeping in mind the scale of the impact.
In these trying times, your assistance and guidance would help us to ensure that all such impacted workers have access to the basic amenities for surviving this extraordinary phase of their lives. Any help from you in the form of essential food commodities will have a profound positive impact on these people in the face of such adversity.
