    Sakshi Barad

    from Pune, Maharashtra

Hey everyone, I am Sakshi Barad.

For 19 years of life, I have constantly faced financial disadvantages. Having experienced setbacks personally, I have been consistently motivated to change the world. Thus, I initiated a social enterprise to help children in my community. I interned at an organization and taught a play-based curriculum to develop life skills in these children. Now I am interning at the same organization to create a play-based curriculum for the children to learn life skills in a fun way. I researched various topics to understand social issues and their causes and wrote research essays. Along with these activities, I have ensured I excel at academics, achieving A or A* grades in my 12th grade on the Cambridge board. I also secured a place at KREA University with a 100% tuition scholarship.
But I still can’t afford a Laptop. And I need a laptop for my college.

Get to know me a bit more.

I come from an economically disadvantaged background. And being raised by a single mother affiliated with vitiligo, along with my two sisters and no male in the family, in this patriarchal society, didn’t improve our economic condition in any way, instead worsened.

This hasn’t stopped me. Fortunately, I was part of the Teach for India classroom, gaining more exposure than government classroom students. And with some hard work, I got into Avasara Academy with a full scholarship. Here, I got the opportunity to explore my interests and take a step toward changing the world that I dreamt of.

In my community, I initiated a social-entrepreneurship project, Petal Arts. I designed and executed art and life-skills building workshops and trained seven student-leaders to start similar initiatives in 3 communities influencing 200 children. I raised money by selling the created art pieces to fund classes, making the project financially sustainable.
I interned and am continuing to intern at Enabling Leadership, to help develop a Lego-based curriculum for introducing and developing life skills in children from government or from low-income private schools.

In my classrooms, I have engaged in multiple research projects. I explored education in India and wrote a report on “Does private education guarantee quality education?” I have written argumentative essays in the past years, studying sustainable development methods. I also wrote a braided narrative on intersectionality: narrating stories of strength and overcoming economic and gender barriers in my childhood and the stigma around vitiligo. The article is published on a journalism website, Feminism In India.

I have been accepted into KREA University, a liberal arts college, with a 100% tuition scholarship for my undergraduate studies. I am almost set to go, but I need support from YOU. For my studies, I require a Laptop. Due to my financial condition, I can’t afford a Laptop. But with your help, if that is a small amount, or you spreading the word, it would mean I can continue to ride the train for my education journey!

If you want to know more about me, my projects, or my academic progress over the years, please email me: sakshi.barad9@ gmail.com

A sincere thank you.
