“My daughter, Sabina is a brave girl. After she underwent a surgery in her waist as a baby, she was paralysed for 2 years. After much efforts, she had started walking with great difficulty. My daughter's strength and willpower have always amazed me. But in the last 4 years, she has been in immense pain both physically and emotionally. It breaks my heart to see her in this condition. But I cannot do anything to help her, I can only pray we get help before it is too late,” - Sabila, 14-year-old Sabina’s mother.

For 4 years, Sabina’s parents had no idea how much pain she was going through

When Sabina started going to school, she felt like any other kid her age but soon she felt left out. She couldn't run or play like others. The young girl always wanted to dance, but never really could. Whenever she saw any dance performance on the television, her eyes would brighten up but she was never able to dance. Soon, she had to discontinue her studies. She stayed home and studied and only appeared for the exams.

Since Sabina was a baby, she had difficulties while urinating. She also had perpetual fever and cough and cold. But her parents, Sabila and Abutaleb didn’t pay much heed until 4 years ago. In December 2014, suddenly Sabina’s entire body swelled up and her cough and cold increased too much. They took her to the doctor, only to find out that the young girl's kidneys are damaged.

Dialysis alone is no longer enough to keep Sabina alive, she needs an urgent transplant

Besides damaged kidneys, Sabina's urinary bladder also needs corrective surgery to ensure that the infections don’t keep coming back. Young Sabina has been on dialysis for the past 4 years. She needs dialysis twice a day but this is not helping. A permanent cure is a kidney transplant and she needs it immediately. Her father, Abutaleb is prepared to donate his kidney to save his daughter’s life. But without help, he will not be able to arrange for her transplant.

“In the past 4 years, I have hardly seen her crying. She doesn’t cry even when she is in extreme pain. But being her mother I understand that her emotional trauma is way worse than her physical pain. 4 years ago, Sabina had to stop going to her school. Whenever my daughter watches her classmate from school who is our neighbhour go to school, I can see her hiding her tears."
After Sabina stopped going to school, her brother, Ashiful was her only friend. He would tell her stories about his friends from college and try to uplift her mood. When Sabina heard that her brother had to stop going to college and started working as a construction worker, she felt it was all her fault. She constantly feels guilty about this.

With a family income of just Rs 15,000 a month, spending Rs 30,000 on Sabina's medicines alone is just impossible for her family. With the increasing expenses, Sabina’s family finds it extremely difficult to manage 2 square meals a day. On most of the months, they don’t even have the money to buy the medicines. They are living a life of debts. Now arranging another Rs 9.1 lakhs is just impossible for them.

How you can help

14-year-old Sabina’s kidneys have damaged completely. She has been suffering for the past 4 years. One surgery at birth has made her differently-abled. But that never brought her life to a standstill, her failing kidneys did. Her father is the donor, the only thing standing in the way is the lack of money. Her parents are in neck-deep debt now. But nothing seems to be enough now.
