Abhaya Pradha Educational Society for the Deaf and Mentally Retarded, a not for profit NGO, was founded in February 2012 by Ms. Dhanalakshmi Sattu. The school provides free speech therapy and hearing aids to the underprivileged children.
Ms. Dhanalakshmi Sattu has been working relentlessly for a decade in this field, and is the driving force behind the school. She was saddened by the sight of many differently abled children in slums, sitting idle at home. They faced many issues- speech difficulties, behavioral issues, slow learning. Another major issue is dealing with parents who weren’t keen to send them to normal school and are also concerned about what opportunities they could possibly have once they are done with the education.
The school started with six children and increased to 50. There are four teachers and children between age group 3-8 are given speech training, written skills development and methods to improve their social behavioral capabilities. Most of the parents are illiterate and low-income background. The parents are also educated on how to groom their children at home. This was the story before the lock down.
The school is shutdown since lock-down started. Children are staying safe at home. Though the school is closed, the Building rent and Teacher’s salaries are to be paid monthly. Due to lack of funds, the founder Mrs. Dhanalakshmi is unable to pay the dues since four months. The owner is insisting to clear the dues immediately. The teachers are also having tough time during this Pandemic time. If the dues are not paid, the owner may lease the building for someone else and school will get closed completely. We need to keep the school running and help these children come back to school once it is opened. Request you to contribute a little amount from your end to bring happiness to these little children once they are back to school.
