The COVID-19 lockdown has directly impacted several vulnerable, disenfranchised, and marginalised communities across the country. This includes transgender folk artistes from across Tamil Nadu, who are left with neither food nor wages in these difficult times.
Socially excluded but religiously important, these artists depend on the auspicious spring season to perform at rituals and gatherings to earn their livelihood for the rest of the year. These three months, which have been taken over by the lockdown, are their only source of income for the entire year. They live on the outskirts of their villages and are often denied food, housing, or any form of support from other villagers. Most of them also do not have official ID proofs - Aadhar, driving license or ration card - and do not receive any support from the government’s social welfare schemes either.
There is an urgent need to help these transgender folk artists survive this lockdown. We are a transgender rights group that is raising funds to support 75 artists across Tamil Naidu with emergency ration supplies (food, oil, salt, and drinking water) for the next two months.
Please donate to this fundraiser and help ensure that their lives and livelihoods are protected. Even a small contribution will go a long way in making a difference to their lives.
PS: Transgender persons include transgender women, transmen and all other gender non-conforming and non-binary persons - including all other socio-cultural identities.
