    Regenerative Nomads Educational Initiative

    from Leh, Ladakh

High in eastern Ladakh, the villages of the Changthang region sit at around 4,500 metres above sea level, in one of India’s most remote high-altitude landscapes. In winter, temperatures can fall to around -25°C to -35°C, making travel, access and everyday life extremely difficult for months at a time.

For young people growing up here, access to education is already challenging. The nearest university is approximately 280 km away, and many eventually have to move towards Leh or outside Ladakh for higher education and work.

But distance is only one part of the challenge.

Young people grow up surrounded by generations of knowledge about pastoral life, pashmina, animals, weather, ecology, culture and local livelihoods. Yet much of this knowledge rarely becomes part of their formal education.

As education increasingly takes young people away from their villages, the connection between learning, local knowledge and future possibilities can also begin to weaken.

This is why Regenerative Nomads is needed.

Regenerative Nomads is a place-based educational initiative supported by SEEHWA Green Foundation, built around one core question: What if education helped young people recognise the knowledge and possibilities that already exist where they come from?

Our philosophy is simple: The learner and the land are the curriculum.

Learning happens not only through textbooks and classrooms, but also through landscapes, elders, pastoralists, local knowledge holders, livelihoods, ecology and lived experience.

Starting 25 December 2026, the Tsokar Winter Residency Programme will create 3-month learning spaces for young people from Thukjey, Samad, Dibring, Puga and Angkung villages.

The programme will combine Maths, Science and English with Regenerative Learning Curriculum rooted in the region itself: its land, ecology, nomadic culture, livelihoods and local knowledge.

We urgently need support to make this possible. Funds will directly support teachers and facilitators, food, transportation between remote villages, learning kits and materials, field-learning experiences and local knowledge holders.

This winter, we want young people in Changthang to have warm, active spaces where they can continue learning, stay connected with one another and discover that valuable knowledge exists both in their textbooks and in the place they call home.

The programme begins on 25 December 2026.
