The Red Cycle is a grassroots collective that engages in dialogue around menstruation and menstrual health. Since 2015, we have been striving to co-create a pioneering people's movement to advance menstruation equity and rights through evidence-driven interventions and policy advocacy in Kerala. The Red Cycle’s demonstrated experience as a co-organiser for the campaign Aarthava Yaanam in 2017, led by Sustainable Menstruation Kerala Collective, is a testament to the organisation's commitment to carrying forward its vision.
Our Mission
We are on a mission to co-create safe and participatory spaces for menstruating individuals in schools in Kerala. Through coordinated efforts, we aim to improve menstruating adolescents’ uninterrupted access to scientifically accurate information, adequate infrastructure and various adolescent health services as mandated under the National Adolescent Health Programme.
Problem Statement
Studies highlight that 27 per cent of adolescent girls in Kerala did not have prior knowledge about menstruation at the time of menarche. For almost 70% of girls, the primary source of information is their mother. Access to scientific information and healthy menstrual health practices is imperative for positive reproductive health. While traditionally, girls have learnt about periods at home, the problem arises with 'what' they are learning about periods, as a social and biological process.

The Red Cycle aims to deliver menstrual education modules to a total of 900 adolescents from 18 schools in 12 block panchayats of the Alappuzha district by July 2023. To fulfil this, we commit to recruiting, training and supporting 3 Resource Persons and 3 Research Assistants with the support of Kudumbashree's Gender Resource Centres in the district.
In the past, The Red Cycle has reimagined the menstrual health space in Kerala by constantly learning from the everyday experiences of menstruating people. In the coming years, we wish to engage with communities in a more localised and focused way. You are integral to achieving these milestones; therefore, we appeal for your continued support of our work!
Thank you!
