I, Reba Roy, the founder of Haltu Meera Foundation, a Non-Government Organization in Kolkata, India want to raise funds for my organisation,that provides primary and secondary education to under-privileged children aged 4 to 15 years living in slums.
The dream to educate underprivileged children
I founded the organization in 2010 and we are passionately working since then to educate the deprived kids. We have also employed Montessori trained teachers to ensure quality education for their children. Additionally, we have tied up with a prestigious school in Kolkata, St. Andrew's Public School, to ensure that children complete secondary education with a certified degree free of cost and get employment opportunities in future. We also facilitate the learning of multiple vocational skills, such as English-speaking, Basic Computer Skills and Handicraft making skills that can help the children get jobs in future. There are arrangements for children to participate in extracurricular activities like music, elocution, drama and sports to instill confidence in them. We provide them with other school essentials like uniform, books, notebooks, pens and pencils to boost their morale.
The passion and rigour to shape the future of the little stars
I am a music teacher by profession with an earning of INR 25000 per month and currently manage education of 30 students by investing my entire earning and savings, and crowdfunding. The organization started with teaching 10 kids and had 50 students enrolled until 2015. But due to lack of funds, we had to reduce the batch strength to 30. However, we have never let the lack of funds be an impediment, even selling my jewelry multiple times to support this organization. Additionally, we have faced challenges in ensuring that the children attend classes regularly. Growing up in poverty with alcoholic fathers and tortured mothers, the kids did not realize the importance of education. To motivate these kids, especially girls, we started door-to-door campaigns to convince the parents and provided meals during classes. The parents were convinced, and the children started attending classes to satiate their hunger. They have now developed a knack to study. During COVID-19 pandemic, schools were closed. Providing online education was difficult since most of the children could not afford smartphones.My teachers and I again innovated and started conducting telephonic conference calls to ensure that no one missed out on their studies.

I have never missed having biological children as these little kids have loved me as their own mother. My only goal in life is to improve the lives of these little stars, whose parents' only hope is us.
How will the fund be utilized?
In the short term, we are working towards educating 100 children. I dream to build a school for the underprivileged children with hostel facilities, where they can study for free without being affected by domestic issues. The fund raised through this campaign will support us to educate many more deprived kids dwelling in the slums.
