    Ravikiran Mane

    from Solapur, Maharashtra

My name is Ravikiran Mane. It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that I have been accepted for the M.Sc programme in Water Management and Governance at the internationally renowned Institute for Water Education, IHE Delft, The Netherlands for the academic year 2021-2023. This Institute is under the auspices of UNESCO. Being a first-generation graduate hailing from Barber’s family, it is indeed a privilege for me to study at IHE, Delft. To pursue this dream I need to pay the tuition fees and cover my living expenses but given my critical financial condition, I can’t do it on my own. Therefore I am making a humble appeal and requesting your support to enable me to realize my dream of studying at IHE.

Background

I am born and brought up in one of the drought-prone village (Jeur village in Solapur District of Maharashtra in India). My father is Barber and earns meagre income to support the family and education. But education has always been their priority and it is due to their commitment towards education, they have supported my studies by borrowings so far.
I have completed my under-graduation in Physics from Abasaheb Garware College, Pune. While doing under-graduation, I gained diverse experience working in several organizations at the grassroots level. I actively engaged in social initiatives like setting up health camps, visiting Ashram schools etc. I joined the Eklavya Academy’s initiative of setting up a library in the village and mobilized thousands of books and also participated in its mentoring programme that provides guidance to first-generation learners to pursue higher education in prominent universities across India. After acquiring some experience I joined the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for the Master's Programme in Water Policy and Governance in 2018-2020. This programme intrigued my interests in water policy especially with respect to drought prone areas and crisis in agriculture.
I could do this because of my family’s unconditional support within the limited means It was only through government scholarships and financial supports from friends I could manage my education fee and accommodation until now. But given the high costs of studies in The Netherland, they are unable to support me this time.

What I have done?

While working as a Research Assistant at TISS, Mumbai and as part of a government project, I noticed that the current management of water in our country lacks people-centred water management and therefore results in numerous crises. I observed farmers digging multiple bore well to extract water for irrigation by mortgaging their land with private money lenders and sometimes eventually losing it them and making them landless. My family is landless today because of this practice. Similarly, many farmers have lost their lives because of the water crisis in our country.  While working as a researcher I found inequalities in the management of water in our country. The water of dams is increasingly being diverted to industry and left the agriculture water-deprived. The problem of drinking water is another pressing concern in rural areas. After having seen all this and my passion to work in the water sector, the studies at IHE will greatly help to advance my knowledge and apply it for the larger societal well-being.

Future Plan

Given the IHE’s reputation and expertise in water issues, I wish to develop expertise in the management and governance of water resources and later wish to engage in research or advocacy in the field of water and sanitation. I genuinely believe that the application of knowledge for the larger welfare of society is one of the most effective ways of participating in socio-economic change. Particularly capacity building and providing sustainable solutions to the water crisis would be my priority areas. I am also interested in implementing and experimenting on creative water solutions at rural as well as urban level. Particularly in the field of equity in water distribution in relation to gender, have deepened my interest in larger questions of improving water governance and accessibility in India

What do I want from you?

Currently, my family is financially dependent on me and cannot support education. Moreover, the pandemic has aggravated the situation further and severely affected the saloon business. Due to the pandemic, many funding agencies have shrunk their scholarships and funding opportunities. I need your support in raising the tuition fees and living expenses in the Netherlands. Though I plan to work part-time, it won’t be adequate to fund my studies therefore I am making a humble appeal to help me raise the following estimated costs of my studies.
