  • Mayapatana is a beautiful small village of Sriramchandrapur Gram Panchayat, district Ganjam in Odisha, India. Most of the people have small share of land which they use for cultivating paddy for their own consumption. The female group of this village are into collecting Kewra (Pandanus odorifer) flower. Collecting Kewra flower is a hazardous task, As the leaves and the steam of the Kewda plant has full of thorns and once pricked it takes long time to heal. The population Mayapatana is roughly around 220 people, and out of the total population, the population of widows in this village is 40(+). The widows are economically helpless after their spouse's death as these women don't have any financial access of their husbands earning.
  • Issues: The NGO READ has been working with the widows who are most helpless after the death of their husbands and live a miserable. The widows are treated as ill-fated in the community and discriminated at all social functions and gatherings. Despite of their family burden the persecution of in-law families supplement to the despondent life of the widows. Therefore READ has initiated to organize the widows of the community and are forming SHGs and SHGs Federation. Through these SHGs and SHGs Federation the widows undertake different development activities for their sustainable dignified life. 
  • One SHG group primarily of widows in Mayapatana, needs fund to  start up fish farming and a poultry in their locality. 
  • Market opportunity: Fish, egg and chicken meat are daily consumable items will are very much sellable items. The products can be sold at the nearby village as the market it a little far from the village.
  • Company Product: The marginalized women after setting up a fishery and a poultry will sell fish, eggs and chicken in the local market.
  • The fund of Rs. 107000/-  (One lakh and seven thousand) will help the women group (primarily of widows) set up a fish farm in their local pond. An amount of Rs. 80000/- (Eighty thousand) will be utilised for purchasing fish seed. The rest amount of Rs. 27000 (twenty seven thousand) will be utilized to start up a micro poultry farm.  After a period of 03 to 06 months they will be able to sell the chicken and fish. The fund which they will get from the profit will be rotated year by year for sustainability. This will help the women widows to be economically independent.
