Today on Muskan’s first birthday, her parents reflect on the long journey here, that felt like ages. Born in the 32nd week, Muskan was a fragile newborn who required lots of tubes, machines, money, and prayers to survive. Her parents managed to bring her out of the oblivion thanks to the prompt money aid and support of the doctors. She does suffer from Cerebral Palsy but that is something her parents can train her to live with. With the right kind of exposure, a child with disability can be truly empowered to live their best life and that opportunity, that shot at making it, counts for everything.
Unfortunately, most of the stories of premature newborns like Muskan end even before they get A shot at life. Families have abandoned babies with disabilities & we want to tell the world that every child is different & deserves an equal chance at survival. India records about 3.6 million premature births each year. What’s disheartening is the fact that 300 thousand out of these 3.6 million, don’t make it.
