Help House Cherai Tails

We started January 2017. There was no plan. It happened that when walking to feed and care for our founder Janghri, we passed a mom, Eisha, her litter and her friend Isha. So we began to feed them, carefully heeding the growls and snarls. Cherai Tails evolved because we could look after the dogs, and when one can help one should, surely. So the home for Janghri was rented and soon became a home for others too. friends donated and sponsored, the fence, the food, the cost of the vaccinations, sterilisations and other medication.

It wasn't that we didn't have obstacles the panchayat, local government could not believe we worked for nothing, and this is Gandhi's country, they offered no help when locals objected to us feeding and sterilising litters. So the community remained ignorant to the fact that we were keeping down dog numbers. Although the dogs are quiet, as uncaged, living as part of the family, neighbours objected. And there was the usual jealousy & mockery.

BUT it began to work our individual dogs grew into healthy, happy, loving animals and began to get good loving homes. there was no choice we could not stop.

Thus we have snowballed, we have injured dogs an litters referred to us and spend a lot of time giving very basic advice to others. Additionally, even the disbelievers witness healthy, friendly dogs developing from what they considered to be valueless dangerous strays.

The hurdles are not simply monetary. In fact we have been well supported by local traders providing credit & donors giving selflessly. So, although we live hand to mouth and I spend hours daily updating news and begging we have managed.
The time on mundane tasks, sourcing the meat for the big meal cooking, pooh clearing, meds and of course the individual attention well it has grown too much for me . As we have become 'known' there is more of everything from responding to enquiries, to advertising, there is no let up on the number of pups we now have 8. 5 big not counting Blue and Melinda  and our outside ladies and babies.
My time is too stretched to care for each adequately. Melinda lost her pups this week she howled and needed attention thankfully she came at night so I sat with her a lot..but it was not good enough. The consequence was of course that i was more tired wit the others too.
So in order to go on i need help. Reliable dependable help.

The cost of getting a property equipped for the dogs etc means we really don't need another 11 month contract and to be told to leave after that again. I am ageing rapidly and have a few medical conditions that will not get better..so there is also no point in buying, even if we had the money.  I have therefore been looking for a lease.

a LEASE means that people who donate over 2500 will have their money returned to them at the end of the 3 years.

a LEASE it gives us 3 years of security and will save me begging to cover the monthly rent.

The property i found is on the seafront. A 3 year lease will be 3 lakhs           Rs 300000. It has 2 residences one in the main area with lots of open space for the dogs and a proper enclosed wall.
The other is next door and could house volunteers-the World Veterinary Service  etc. It is being leased as part of the same agreement which will allow for subletting. So should i need to, I could rent the other house and use the money to pay for help.
On the down side at high tide a few times a year the sea enters BUT i am at this moment surrounded by a garden that is knee high in water.
I have to move by the end of this month..and really see this as a golden opportunity.
the cost of the work needed can be raised as we go..I just need to move there is no space here and the contract is up.

3 lakhs is about    €3800     £3600    US $4300   Aus$6300

We have had a year of miracles and although time is short I know now not to let money say NO before I try.
If you know of anyone could help please share.
Needless to say we have very little time.

Hello,

Hard times but lets hope it gets people to cooperate and fully appreciate how all life is is interconnected on this planet and how we need to sustain and  and respect this!

We continue as before, The dogs on the beach need food more then ever now as there are no tourists and no discarded edible waste. The monsoon approaches and this home, that you our donors made possible needs work to enable the pups and dogs to weather the extreme heat of April/May and the downpours of the monsoon.
We have had vipers to deal with, but so far our night shelters (which have concrete under-laid fences and the daily drizzling of diesel along the border has kept the dogs safe.

There will be more pups in need, more vaccinations and more sterilzations.  However I have started a campaign that is URGENT, we will not be able to get the builders again and with Covid 19 funding has already disappeared. WE need to be able to look after the dogs we have at the shelter, so PLEASE whatever you can give it all makes such a difference.

https://milaap.org/fundraisers/help-cherai-tails

Thank you! Thank you so much for empowering us to do the work we do. I get the joy of watching pups grow, love and be happy, none of which would happen were it not for your support.

Dear Supporters,

Miracle Monday. Woke to know we only had 180 odd in the bank not enough to buy the meat/fish for the day's meal. Plus, Polo and Rossi's wounds were seeping despite being inside with the fan on, they were sterilised on Thursday. Little Whistle who'd arrived Saturday needed the vet too.

I have learnt not to stress too much we have managed for a year and a half living hand to mouth. Your hands.

At 8.30 am, out of the blue a donation. Rs 1500 into this fundraiser from Abba who clearly has deep faith. I have never heard of this person and don't believe he/she follows our facebook page @cheraitails. A random stranger sends enough for 2 days food, vet visit and medication, in rupees which meant it cleared very quickly and was in my account.
Not the only miracle, we seem to live off them. Saturday morning a long-time follower who travels too much to have his own dog came to spend time with ours. Not afraid to love, he is such an avid follower knows as much about each individual as I do. Someone not afraid to love for loves sake. He has spare guttering and a hair trimmer that he can donate, the guttering will help direct the rainwater away from the dogs run around the house and thus reduce the number of mosquitoes.
Additionally, Another @Cheraitails follower drove for 5 hours here, to deliver Whistle. 5 weeks old, on her own on the streets, he'd been feeding her and treating her skin problem, but humans pelting her was the ultimate danger. She has not been with her own and is stressing Bubble out as snaps and gets afraid with the rough play fighting, house rules are no biting. She's been remarkably quick to adapt, is the same size as Wendy and Winston, the latter has taken a real shine to her.

Whistle far right with Wendy, Yang and Duster. The first evening she ate with the others out of the same dish, and here she is the morning after she arrived sleeping soundly and from her position quite clearly feeling safe.

The Monday before last, waiting for the builders to fix the fence after they had wasted a day and our cash as there was no electricity, which naturally the elec board had not warned us about.
The fence facing the pond has now been completed, we hope. I had two buy 2 more corrugated sheets, most was done on Monday and the final (hopefully) bits Saturday. No more sightings of the viper..but plenty of turtles have been moved pond side!!

These cute creatures are here in abundance, live in the pond. Peru is sort of used to them now although can still wake me barking if one has dared to venture into her territory. Bubble has now taken over as the turtles move down the path between the oldies section and theirs...so for the last 3 night I have been awake since 2 am, last night I got a sense and snoozed in the chair from 8.30 pm so am dead on my feet today.

So, Saturday 17th. Builders showed up (3 not 2 as expected that's another rs 850 wages), but one is an electrician/plumber. So the fence got done, 3 Barney Bennets have been made, 2 need wire mesh (didn't have the money for it), but I can put that on, and a rubbish pit was dug..which will prevent not only the eyesore created by burning the newspaper containing poo and paper waste but also keep ants etc that the rubbish attracts in one place away from us!! Tap outside the back door, for the hose & washing hands/feet, a light in the kitchen but most importantly the ceiling fan that Chris donated was fitted in the puppy area.
I plan to use the area for recouping pups after sterilisation, the fan will keep all flies and mozzie's away as well as keep them cool and when I get the cash I will put lino on the floor, cool and easy clean keep ants off. So for the new pups, we have a small BB, that they can feel safe from the larger dogs in and they will have the luxury of a fan and covered floor....help with keeping them clean and curing skin problems etc.
I will get some photos taken.
The solar panel is finally up and running it powers all the lights, fans and plug sockets (bar the fridge). This means the freezer that Aimee so kindly donated can do come in and when I get the cash will stock it with cheap fish and chicken liver reducing our daily expenses considerably.
I am using the plastic lids saved from tinned dog food to cover the tops.
All the Christmas cards sold ..and have been sent, I am putting the profits towards the pipe feeders, have two pipes need to change the bends and work out a way to keep ants from the dried food before I get them onto the beach.

While we are on the subject of food I could really do with some puppy packets and puppy dried food. Some kind soul sent no tix but with pups and them being outside we go through 2 a week so that too if anyone can please.

Rani's adopter is arranging a beach glass bottle clean up this Saturday so we can finish the fencing, Serb has already got his paw stuck in the corrugated. Here he is in his Mr Universe pose on the newly secured fence pond side..and Peru trying to make up for her height.

We are hoping to get publicity and encourage others to use or at least recycle the bottles..i shall report on how we do next update or this will never be posted.
We are in need of cash for vaccinations now..hopefully, Duster has a great adopter has said he will come on the 22nd. ! Bubble badly needs a home.

Dear Supporter,

8th November This week…
Rani came back for 2 weeks, the gang took a day or so to adjust but things are back to normal, Rani fights Bubble for dominance constantly, plays rough and naturally with Rossi,

has had a few head to head with Duster ( who’s getting stronger every day..she doesn’t always win), Rani bullies Yang and on occasion has made the mistake of taking on Polo.

Ying with Yang on their last afternoon together.

There was further pack realignment when Ying was adopted, leading to Duster being in the mix more and Yang more alone. Yang is soft in nature and more of a pet always alert to where I am waits for me if I'm out.

I have introduced her to the insiders, Wendy and Winston and am hoping she will be their big sis.
Wanda has found a lovely home near the hospital where I have the sterilizations done. So Winston lost his more energetic playmate and has taken to demanding more attention from me while Wanda is resting!! They have all had their second flea injection & once they have been wormed again and their coats are healthy e shall get the 6-week multi vaccine.

Wanda leaving, Wendy patting Wanda’s back and wee mousy Buddha belly Winston.

We haven’t seen our viper again and the three Peru, Panama  & Serb are a little bored but quite happy in their territory. I have been trying to get the anti-venom all week so that in a worst-case scenario we’d be prepared. I will visit Dr Giresh at the hospital and ask him today. On Tuesday through Peru decided to show she was no fool and led the other 2 out, dug a tunnel easily under the fence by the pond that’s due to be fixed.. I was cooking but luckily an amazon courier rang from the gate. I emerged to see the 3 blissfully exploring, there followed 10 minutes of mine trying to get Peru to obey,  while the 3 raced  around wagging their tails and laughing at me ,,,it was only when I sat on the ground with the leads in front of me that the 3 feckers came to me!!! Anyhow, I added to the temporary block with all the bricks and wood I could find and reminded the builders (on a roofing job) to come. They eventually came on Thursday, a full day without electricity and no warning, no one answering the phone at the board..the power was off all day! So the fence that we’d taken down by the pond had to be put up..and only the odd jobs could be done..waste of 1900 the days pay but no-one to blame. We are hoping they will come today, Friday.
The amazon courier has been bringing me to surprise anonymously sent gifts…from our amazon moving list. I got a wonderful sickle that is really helping me keep the garden down am doing a section each day, prevent snakes and gardeners fees. We also bought more solar lights and some rechargeable mozzie zappers. Bella got the most lovely bowl that doesn’t slide ..she always had a problem with moving dishes.

I have discovered that cider vinegar mixed 1:3 with water is EXCELLENT at repelling ants and mozzies and is good for dogs coats so all sleeping areas now pong a bit!

Bella is truly in her element it’s great. She has the run of the place and lets everyone know it. Now that she isn’t scraping her limp hind legs on the tarmac like in the old place I can get her all white and fluffy again. She sleeps and sits up with me a lot on the back porch and I have added a soft mat to the wishlist for her as the bathmat she is using is small.
We haven’t found a home for Bubble yet and with everything going on or not going on I haven’t started training her.  I hope to start Monday, this weekend I aim if the workers come to move the middlers  (Rani, Polo, Bubble & Rossi )to their section.

Rossi, Polo & Rani are due their sterilisation have been trying to get the doctor all week. I have been promised a date today. We gave Rani her multi vaccine booster and rabies yesterday, Rossi got her multi vaccine we can do rabies after the op.

So the plan is to have Duster, Winston, Wendy and Yang in the run around the house, Polo, Bubble, Rani (or another week) and Rossi in the middle section and the 3 big ‘uns without an easy escape route in their quarters.
Polo is the problem not only is she not suited to being outside in the heat...hence here with the fan Gersten. Her fluff is too thick and she’s itchy..she also is really not suited to living in a pack of dogs...gets very snappy but has contained herself so far. She’s a companion dog and really just wants to travel and be beside me... I have done everything to get her a home and no go..got one offer o a guy who has no outside area, uses pads or toileting and already has 4 dogs she’d be going out o the frying pan..... I have asked for a grooming set on line

I plan to talk to a trainer in Ernakulam..he may be able to train her quickly she’s very obedient just wants me...SO I may be doing a separate appeal to over her training..although I have SO much more time now..pressure cooker and nicer home etc The villa is starting to pick up bookings (i have had time to boost it) and all that washing cleaning etc has to be done. I am rushing there now. I polo were trained she could come with me and just be my fluff shadow. The only option really..she will have to adjust in with Bella though at home.

Along the beach, I have managed 3 times this week. Have priced the pipes and bends or these feeders and know an auto driver who would fill them or a price, I am buying 2 lots today and going to experiment with how to attach them so they can’t be robbed or easily vandalised the plan is to try one here and on the beach so how they go next week. Then price them including filling...and advertise for sponsors. Would be small cost and then need to be regular small donations.

That's the lot I think or this week I have to all Santhoshi’s owner but that’s a whole different ballgame. I'm closing the campaign. Please follow us on supprt-peshna-turakhia-2..

Thank you,
