As per Maharashtra Plastic and Thermocol Products (Manufacture, Usages Sales, Transport, Handling and Storage) Notification 2018, plastic disposable items such as plastic straws remain banned and can be fined from INR 5,000 up to INR 25,000. 

However, the reality on-ground is quite different- you can see a lot of plastic straws everywhere in our city, Mumbai especially at coconut and juice vendors!

At One Less Piece of Plastic, we are doing our bit to make the ban more effective on-ground by sensitising coconut vendors and consumers across Mumbai against the use of plastic straws. And to help them transition to paper straws, we provide it to them at very subsidised rates (not free).

The cost of 100 plastic straws is approximately between Rs. 10 - 20 and the cost of 100 paper straws is approximately Rs. 80-100. The coconut vendors won't be able to afford such a steep rise in the cost of alternative straws.

So through this campaign, we're offering a packet of 100 paper straws at the rate of only Rs. 20 to the coconut vendors and are trying the raise the remaining amount through community support on this fundraiser.
