    from Alwar, Rajasthan

The Nirvanavan Foundation is a grassroots organization working in the remote areas of Alwar district of Rajasthan. The foundation identified 10 villages of Nat and Kanjar community in 2002, where there were no government schools. It started schools in these communities gradually covering all the 10 villages. These communities are excluded from mainstream education because of the stigma associated with them. Stigma persists as girls from these communities go to the dance bars in western India and also to the middle east to earn their living through prostitution. The organization has developed an activity-based curriculum for the children attending the schools. Our curriculum research wing has also designed events to bring the communities together.  Now we are running only five schools because of the scarcity of funds including a hostel for children from Nat community who are nomadic. There are around 800 children attending the schools right now across the five schools. With no other resources available, we can’t let these children drop out of education system and perpetuate the existing inequalities.

The organization has been instrumental in not only imparting education also organizes several events across the year for the conservation of historical, cultural and natural heritage to create awareness and to promote child rights. Two such major events are ‘Art Mela for World Peace’ to involve larger community with children and ‘Slumboys Cricket Tournament’ to promote harmony and peace. Artmela bring in the larger community to the schools and cricket tournament lets children interact with the larger community outside the school premises. Along with these two major events, organization also organizes International Earthday, Van Mahotsav, Basant Panchami- A festival of folk music and dance, Makar Sankranti – A festival of rural wrestling, Womens Day, Annual Seminar on non-violence and how non-violence can be used as a tool in a classroom situation and daily life, Deepotsava – Diwali festival in honour of ‘Nat and Raj Nat (Kanjer) Communities, Holi at Pipalgarh, Raksha Bandhan with the children living in orphanages, etc.

Our school works on community driven model, committee comprises of women and men who wish to make a change in their community. It has a very unique learning environment and way of conducting class - promotes inclusivity and participation of the community. The time-table is divided into five periods 1).Period of common action,  2).Period of Non-activity, 3).Period of joy,  4).Period of Subjects, and 5) Period of Arts. The relationship between tutor and  student is peculiar to our school as many of  our first batch students are now serving as teachers, trainers and administrator.

We are raising funds for Nirvanavan Foundation Schools. The funds will directly go to the foundation to help children continue their education. These funds will primarily be used for sustaining the staff of the schools, basic maintenance and once school reopens - for the transportation of the children. The amount being raised will help us with the fixed cost to run these schools.

We are also looking for friends who would like to help us with funds on the regular basis. Any amount will help us save and run these schools. In case you are willing to support us, do write to us on alwartiger@gmail.com or ishu_gupta@zhcet.ac.in
