While the world drew its shield against the Corona pandemic, there were defenceless families residing in the slums of Ghaziabad whose daily livelihood were severely affected. Among them were maids, rag pickers and other labourers who struggled to even afford their daily meals. But a week ago, things changed for good.
A team of 28 volunteers from Nirbhed Foundation, along with their founder walked into the slums with packages of sanitizers, liquid soap and masks. Distributing them to over 1000 families (over 7000 people) they educated them on the ways to prevent infection. They sanitized the hands of children in the slums. Seeing their struggle for food, the team promised them two meals a day which they have been devotedly delivering every day, for the past one week. They have been a ray of light for the starving people in the slums.
Founded in 2015, Nirbhed Foundation is an NGO that strives to uplift the economically deprived section of the society by providing the children from those families with education, among other things. Today, Nirbhed has two centers educating 750 students, and a dedicated team of volunteers. But amidst the pandemic, their lives went astray. Jobs were lost, and families were left to starve.
“Classes can always be compensated later. But hunger is a different thing - It has to be now. The poor are the most affected during outbreaks like these. Initially, we went there so we could handover masks and sanitizers to our students and their families. But seeing the slums, we changed our mind. If we are doing it, we want to do it entirely, without any bias. We decided to sponsor every family in the slums with two meals every day, along with masks, soap and sanitizer." – Sushil, Founder and president, Nirbhed Foundation.
The team has spent over 3 lakhs from their pockets so far. It will cost them 50 lakh rupees to be able to afford the following for over 1000 families till the pandemic dies down and their lives get back to normal :
