A little over a year ago, we were preparing for the birth of our first baby. We had a beautiful pregnancy and were expectantly awaiting the arrival of our little bundle of joy. Little did we know that we were also being prepared for the biggest test of faith.
Nathaniel’s story begins in the Neonatal ICU, where he spent the first two months of his life on earth! From the warm comfort of his mother’s womb he was taken right into the ICU, and prepared for his first surgery which happened on the second day of birth. We felt like we were in the midst of a tornado when we learnt that our beautiful boy was born without an anal opening, a birth defect which was then rectified through 3 major surgeries. The first six months was a time of perseverance, as we saw Nathaniel battle through a surgery every two months.
Meanwhile we also got a diagnosis which confirmed that he was sporting an extra chromosome on the 21st pair, a condition known as Down’s syndrome. As much as we were overwhelmed, we knew that this was the beginning of something extraordinary.
When Nathaniel was nine months old, we received confirmation that he has profound hearing loss; post which we almost immediately, started training him with hearing aids hoping that it would help.
Nathaniel adapted well to having a device sticking around his tiny ears, and upon further consultations we were advised to consider a cochlear implant for both his ears, given the severity of the loss. While the hearing aids would help him to hear sounds, it is unlikely to be effective in aiding him to attain speech. The implants would allow him to hear with more clarity which is important to attain speech.
The surgery is planned for November 2019, and we are eagerly hoping that Nathaniel would soon be able to embrace the world of sounds.
Needless to say, the journey with this little boy has been trying in many ways and yet so profoundly rewarding ! Nathaniel’s story is about to get more beautiful and we are committed to giving him the best of what we can as he strives to win these battles towards good health.
