As of November 11, 2022, Mrs. Nanda Thakkar, a 63-year-old woman with a longstanding history of significant health issues, is facing a new and serious medical challenge. She recently underwent surgery to remove a cyst, along with her ovaries and uterus. While the surgery was successful, her recovery has encountered complications. The surgical wound became infected, and the stitches failed to heal properly.
On the day her stitches were scheduled to be removed, they unexpectedly reopened, necessitating urgent medical intervention. Mrs. Thakkar's current treatment regimen includes multiple rounds of wound care and close monitoring by her surgeon. Her condition requires an extended hospital stay of approximately 10 days, with daily expenses amounting to ₹8,000, excluding medication costs. The mounting medical expenses have imposed an overwhelming financial strain on her family.
Her child, Shai Thakkar, is now facing significant financial difficulties and is struggling to meet the costs of her ongoing treatment. Shai, a 32-year-old trans-identifying individual, is living with HIV and diabetes, and already grapples with personal health and financial challenges. In addition to these burdens, Shai is a Master's student in English Literature and dedicates time to rescuing and caring for stray cats in Navi Mumbai.
Despite these numerous challenges, Shai has been the primary caregiver for Mrs. Thakkar, who has been managing multiple serious health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and neuropathy, along with the lasting effects of a partial paralysis attack suffered in 2017. Mrs. Thakkar’s health has steadily declined since the paralysis incident and worsened after she contracted COVID-19, which led to the onset of neuropathy and other complications, such as an umbilical hernia and gallbladder stones, both of which required surgeries. Most recently, she underwent a hip replacement procedure due to Avascular Necrosis, a condition that significantly deteriorated her hip joints.
Throughout these multiple surgeries and hospitalizations, Shai has been financially and emotionally drained. The constant medical costs and the demands of caregiving have made it increasingly difficult for Shai to manage the mounting expenses. Shai is now seeking financial support to cover Mrs. Thakkar’s ongoing medical expenses.
