Monica is the usual 8-year-old child who you see next door- very active, very attentive. She loved going to school and her parents were proud of her grades and progress. She loved playing with her friends after coming back from school and was good at sports. Suddenly, the about of measles led to Monica being very ill for a month and recovering from it. But fate had a different turn for this little girl. Monica suffers from SSPE, a rare chronic progressive and fatal disease caused by the persistent infection of immune resistant measles virus. 1 in every 1L people who are infected with measles develop SSPE and its cause is not known. Monica started by showing mood swings and complained of headaches and frequently got fever initially.
Her parents cared for her but then one day Monica had a severe seizure and her parents were dumbstruck. They rushed her to the local hospital which gave some basic medicines without a deeper diagnosis. Her parents were worried but ignorant about what was happening in their daughter’s body. They cared for her and she returned to school. However, in the next few weeks and days, their worst nightmares came true. Monica started rigorously jerking, having seizures, started losing her memory and loss of vision too. That’s when her parents visited a neurologist. When the specialist got a deeper diagnosis and told her parents that she has SSPE, they didn’t even know what it is. When they learned about SSPE they were devastated and deeply grieved. My baby is fighting for each breath says her mother.
Today Monica is completely immobile, has lost most of her memory, has several seizures in a day, and has erratic food intake. There is no cure for SSPE “You can’t do anything about this child. Just love her” this is what one among the many neurologists have told Monica’s parents. Monica’s father works at a local grocery store and is hardly able to make ends meet. The cost of the medicines to ease Monica’s pain and seizures are no longer affordable. Her parents have consumed all their savings for their sweet little daughter and still hope that someone will save their girl miraculously. They’re not only penniless but also debt-ridden even after selling their jewelry.
