Help Save the Stray Dogs of Spiti
In the freezing winters of Kaza and nearby villages in Spiti, where temperatures drop to -30°C, over 700 stray dogs struggle to survive. With most hotels and homestays shut due to the harsh weather, these dogs are left without food. Many are forced to starve or even turn on each other—sometimes eating weaker dogs or even their own puppies.
This heartbreaking problem has been ongoing for over 10 years, and as the dog population keeps growing, so does their suffering. Hungry and desperate, the dogs have also become aggressive, occasionally attacking tourists and even locals.
But there's hope. A group of 10-12 local women, known as the Mentok Self-Help Group (lovingly called "Kutto ki Amma"), have been feeding these dogs since 2007. Every Sunday, they come together to cook and provide food for the dogs throughout the week. But with the growing number of strays, their efforts alone aren’t enough.
What We Aim to Do:
- Set up sterilization camps in Kaza and nearby villages to control the stray dog population.
- Provide enough food to help these dogs survive the extreme winters.
We need your support to make sure hunger is never the reason for a puppy's death in Spiti.
