    Mohammad Omar

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Hello,

My name is Omar and I am here to ask for your help to be able to go study at the University of Oxford. This year in March, I have received an unconditional offer of study at Oxford for an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies and I am trying to raise funds for the same. I have graduated recently from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) with an MSc in International Politics. Prior to that, I studied Political Science at the undergraduate level at Delhi University.

APPEAL:
A few years back my father lost his primary livelihood. My mother, then had to take up a teaching job at a school while my father was making efforts to make ends meet through the limited earnings from the family orchard. To arrange for my graduate studies at SOAS, my father took a loan to take care of my tuition and related expenses. To sustain the family, he sold off the orchard which was otherwise the only source of income.

My father was a patient of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) that had progressed to a clinically severe stage. In November, 2020 when I was preparing my MPhil applications, he got infected with Covid-19 and was critically ill in ICU at AIIMS, New Delhi. In December he was discharged while yet on oxygen support but due to post-Covid complications, he breathed his last on 9th January, 2021.

I require funds for my proposed studies: the tuition fee at Oxford is INR 54,95,462 (53,354 GBP). As things stand, institutional funding support has not come through and with the passing away of my father, the outstanding loan for SOAS and the Oxford fee are not affordable for me. As for my living expenses, I will be working alongside my studies to meet the same.

MOTIVATION AND PURPOSE:
My great grandfathers and grandfathers contributed to the freedom struggle first hand: from getting jailed, to professing freedom poetry, to co-authoring the Constitution of India - all put together. Growing up I have imbibed my elder’s experiential narratives as my intellectual bread and butter. Consequently, during the course of my undergraduate studies I undertook many research projects and also wrote articles for several magazines. Both the research and the articles focused on analysing inequalities and disparities across different socio-economic groups in the country. My research at SOAS including my dissertation focused on identity politics, analysis of current narratives and their impact on Indian society. After the completion of my degree, my thesis was selected for publication by the SOAS South Asia Institute.  At Oxford, I intend to take my research forward to bring to light how contemporary divisive narratives are leading to a normalisation of a polarised society. This acceptance from Oxford has been the result of a lot of hard work and conviction. I want to use this opportunity to further solidify my knowledge of Indian socio-political issues and apply that in pursuit of a PhD. My goal is to study and theorize the adversities and suffering that are faced by the marginal sections of the society due to prevailing social and political circumstances, and in turn create positive impact through my work.

This is where I stand as I seek your help in going forward on my journey.
