They are what many might see as unsung heroes, but on crutches and wheelchairs, and led by their unbreakable spirit. One such team we would like to bring to the forefront for their relentless efforts at fighting against COVID-19 and serving the underprivileged, is MITTI Cafe.
The country is fighting its worst battle against COVID-19 with almost 4 lakh cases reported everyday and the death toll in thousands. It is abysmal and the poor are among those that have been hit the worst by the pandemic, unable to afford basic necessities amid lockdown.
So, the team at Mitti Cafe has made it their mission to do what they do best, in an effort to help those that are in desperate need for their help. They have started cooking to feed the needy and during the first COVID-19 wave, they cooked and served over 1.3 million meals to various disadvantaged communities that were severely affected by the pandemic.
With the country facing the deadliest second wave, there has been a surge in the number of people in need of food and oxygen, and the team is doing everything in their power to help them. Their kitchen is running at full capacity, which is helping them distribute over 3,000 meals every single day. They have also been providing oxygen cylinders to the poor in their homes.
The wonderful humans at Mitti Cafe have set out to prove that the sheer will to help anyone in need will not only make a world of difference, but also spark generosity in others to render their help too. After all, kindness given is kindness received.
Last year, the wide-spread pandemic forced them to shut down all their branches and they were left with no income to support their 100+ employees with disabilities. For a while it seemed like things weren't looking up, but their optimism never let them give up.
Then, a fundraising campaign initiated through Milaap became their silver lining and thousands of people came forward to render these wonderful humans and their families the support that they needed to stay afloat. They hadn't expected that their initiative would garner the support that it did, and having received such an incredible response from people, the team wanted to do the same for all those in distress.
Mitti Cafe founded by Alina Alam, is an initiative working to achieve economic independence and dignity of the specially-abled. They do so by providing training, employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities for adults with intellectual, physical, and psychiatric disabilities through the creation of cafes within institutional spaces.
It is a platform for individuals with disabilities to channel their creativity and potential into productive activities and create awareness for the cause of equal opportunities in employment.
But they are running out of resources to keep their mission going and are appealing to you, once again, to help them because they want to continue their incredible work. They want to do their part in the battle against COVID-19 and you can do yours by supporting them. Any contribution you make will go a long way.
Mitti is a Non-Profit organisation.
