    Menstruators

    from North East India

My name is Nitisha and I stand for the values of equity, inclusion and oneness for myself and others.

I got my first period at 13 and was using single use plastic pads for my period until the age of 27. I was horrified to know that the very first pad I used at the age of 13 is going to be on the planet for 800 years! I was still among the 36% privileged women who had access to a period product in India. I had the choice, information and support to shift from single-use plastic pads to an eco-friendly product, which is healthy for me and our planet. This 2nd Oct (Swachh Bharat Day) I want to take one step further to provide access to womxn in challenging communities of Dimapur and Kalimpong to also have this option.

'Green Period Project' is an initiative under my campaign #GreenTheSwitch to create awareness, access and action for menstruators to make the shift to an eco-friendly alternative for a cleaner, greener and healthier period.

The idea is to have a pledge system where menstruators from urban areas take up the aim to make the switch in 2020. For every pledge that the urban menstruator makes, a menstruators in a challenging/vulnerable community in the North East is provide the product of choice to them - reusable pads or menstrual cups. (You can take the pledge HERE)

The funds raised from this campaign will be used to provide training, support and products for 50 womxn from communities in the North East through community based organisations.

Reach - If 50 menstruators make the pledge and the switch this year, 50 menstruators from a marginalized community get a period product that'll support them for at least 5 years.

The total reach will be 100 menstruators who will be making the shift to an eco-friendly alternative while reducing a minimum of 2,40,000 less plastic bags being dumped in the landfills for the next 5 years. (Assuming 1 plastic sanitary pad = 4 plastic bags)

(The Math - 100 menstruators x 10 pads/menstruator x 12 months x 4 plastic bags x 5 years = 240000 plastic bags)
