Ramnad needs water!
#BounceBackRamnad is an initiative to bring water to 455 villages in Kamudhi Taluk, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu. Women, children, and even 80-year-olds stand in long lines to fetch three pots of water for their families. Parents give their teenage daughters handcarts as a dowry so that they don’t have to carry pots of water on their heads as they walk for seven kilometres every day to fetch water for their families. This is the reality of the 455 villages in Ramanathapuram district.
Ramnad, which was once known for its large number of wetlands, is now completely dry, and the region is stuck in a water crisis.
Many women and children faint from thirst, heat exposure, and exhaustion. Water bodies have dried out; whatever little trickles are brackish—salty and deadly to consume. The ground reality is visible to anyone who visits Ramnad, including 80-year-olds to 8-year-olds, waiting in the hot sun to get three pots of water for the family. The story only gets worse. Even after this struggle, they have to pay for the water. The chronic lack of water has taken a toll on the local economy, school attendance, farming, and the health of the entire community. To solve all this, we need to first give them legitimate access to water.
Therefore, we have decided on a slew of steps to restore waterbodies in and around Ramanathapuram. Our first step is the restoration of a 14-kilometre-long Sankarathevan canal. The canal starts in Parayankulam, Kamudhi Taluk, Ramanathapuram, and ends in Saayalkudi, Kadalaadi Taluk, Ramanathapuram. This canal was full of life and was serving water to 455 villages, but now this canal is fully colonised by Prosopis Juliflora, leaving the entire region devoid of any other vegetation. Groundwater levels are low, and the water is salty. Once restored, this canal can help lakhs of beneficiaries living in these villages get water.
Friends, I believe in the power of charity coming together to do good. By working together, we can overcome this water crisis and secure a better future for these villagers.
Your donations will mean children can go back to the playground and take water breaks instead of sacrificing their childhood so that their families can have water! Your donation will mean 80-year-olds can get their single pot of water without having to wait in long lines for hours together. Your donations have the power to bring water to these 455 villages in Ramanathapuram.
