    This fundraiser will benefit

    Marginalized Tribal Community of Purulia

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

The Problem:
Situated in the westernmost part of West Bengal, Purulia constitutes the most underdeveloped district in the state. Plagued by rampant poverty, low literacy rates and high tendencies to drop out of school. To tackle such an entrenched and structural issue we must deal with the root of the problem that is education. The children of Purulia do not have reliable access to educational centers or materials making the learning process much more difficult. Without the right infrastructure it will become progressively more difficult for the people of Purulia to reach their full potential. Practically they face a number of challenges which were revealed through our surveys and field work. They faced problems such as:

  •  Most children are first-generation learners. While local primary schools exist, they are often 3 km away across difficult, off-terrain paths. Overcrowded classrooms sometimes exceeding the teacher capacity leads to children being frequently ignored.
  • A large section of the population (40%) is considered socially excluded and consists of tribal communities such as the Santhals, Kurmis and Kheria-Sabars, Munda and Mura who majorly function as migrant workers.
  • With the literacy rate dwindling and less than 10% of the population having completed 12 years of schooling, a large part of the population are migrant workers leaving children without parental supervision leading to academic non-adjustment.
Our Vision and Solution:
  • To remedy the issue of easy access to educational facilities, we aim to establish a dedicated Study Centre to provide the children remedial coaching.
  • To achieve this goal our plan is to set up a semi-permanent tent that will be able to comfortably accommodate our student size of 27. Such a tent will prove immensely beneficial to the students as it will act as not only a community center but will also save them from the harsh trek to other institutions. Such a tent would cost Rs. ~40,000
