I am Manav Shah, a student of Ahmedabad University, struggling to accumulate funds to fulfil my dreams to become a scientist. I was born on 4th November 1996 in a Gujarati family. In India people think that Gujarati family are business family and hence they are rich, which is clearly a misconception. My grandfather was a cloth merchant who had a shop in the old city. Due to increased thefts and loan amounts we had to sell the shop and clear the dues. Now he is a retired 82 year old man regretting his life decisions of not investing and saving money to support his family. My father is a share sub broker, an occupation which 70 percent ahmedabadis do as a part time business. Due to heavy competition and betrayal from his partner he decided that his son will be nowhere involved in this business.
I studied at Prakash higher secondary school which is the only central board school in the city my parents could afford. I passed my 10th and 12th board exams with first class and decided to peruse biological research course. My father though insisted that I should give the engineering entrance exam. It was an achievement for me to clear the entrance being a biology student. My journey as a scientist began when I joined Ahmedabad University in integrated Masters in life science course. My faculties believed in my spirit and ability and allowed me to learn and operate instruments like scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, flow cytometer and many more whose handing is prohibited even for PhD students. I was the in charge of these instruments. As the committee leader of the Chiasma biofest conducted at our university, being an undergraduate student I used to tech Masters and PhDs how to handle these instruments.
I was a part of many interdisciplinary ventures of our university, did lot of projects as my curriculum and internships. After doing a lot of scientific stuff at my university I developed interest in pursuing PHD and becoming a researcher. So I cleared my GRE and Toefl with good score took up one year thesis at IIT madras which is one of the best engineering colleges in the country. There I developed a solution for a very common global problem “water pollution”. We developed a fluoride sensor which will be patented by the end of this year. For my further studies I opted for Biomedical engineering at University of Florida which is a high ranking university in USA.
The only place I am lacking for becoming a good researcher is the finances. As an outsider I do not fit in most scholarship programmes of the university. My parents have already paid till my master’s study. So I request you guys to make a donation of any amount you can and share this with whom so ever you feel like. You smallest contribution will take me one step closure to fulfill my dreams.
