Madan Lal was born in the small village of Daso Majra, located near the industrial city of Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. As a young child, he was infected with the polio virus. Over time, his legs became paralyzed, and by the age of 12, it was no longer possible for him to walk to the city to attend school.
Since then, Madan has been fully dependent on his friends and family in the village, who help him daily with eating, washing, and moving around. Today, at 21 years old, his condition has worsened. He has lost strength in his hands, making it difficult even to hold a cup of water.
We at Ruchi NGO visited Madan after he reached out to us, knowing our organization’s dedication to uplifting rural communities in Himachal Pradesh. We were deeply moved by his story and inspired by his resilience. Despite his paralysis, Madan has actively sought help for many years but has unfortunately received very little meaningful support from government schemes or other NGOs.
The government currently provides him with only ₹1,050 per month, which barely addresses his basic needs and does nothing to solve the core issue: his lack of mobility. While Madan is eager to work, perhaps in roles such as a receptionist, watchman, or lift operator, his inability to come to the city prevents him from applying for such jobs. He has approached another organization for a wheelchair but was turned down because they could only offer manual wheelchairs, which he is unable to operate due to the weakness in his hands.
This is why he has turned to us, to raise funds for an electric wheelchair which would grant him the freedom to move independently and live with greater dignity. Madan’s story, his resilience, and his courage are truly inspiring. He dreams of being an active part of society and using his smart and social mind to contribute to the well-being of others. Yet, he fears becoming a burden on the younger generation in his village, especially as social ties gradually weaken, potentially leaving him behind in the years to come.
We hope his story touches your heart and inspires you to contribute, no matter how small, to help Madan regain his mobility, independence, and hope for a better future.
